  • IC, pregnancy, & folate

    Hey guys,

My husband and I are hoping to have a baby soon. I know that women of childbearing age are recommended to take a folic acid supplement.

    BUT

Folate really really really hurts my IC and the pain will last for days from just one pill. So I won't take it. I've tried different brands, etc. They all make me hurt.

I have also tried eating fortified cereals but they cause pain too.

    Any ideas?

I should probably talk to my OB/GYN but I no longer have one! The OB/GYN I was going to for the last few years was actually an IC specialist as well. Then she up and moved to California.

I'm hesitant to discuss this w/ a doctor b/c I feel that most of them minimize my pain and will just tell me to suck it up. And I can't do that. Honestly this vitamin hurts me more than any substance.

I guess I could just eat beans all day long....... ?

    Current Rx Meds:
    Atarax, Ditropan, Elmiron
Prior to pregnancy: The above 3 meds PLUS Neurontin, Topamax, Loratadine, continuous OrthoCyclen, Lidocaine Patches PRN, Temazepam PRN, & Vicodin PRN
    Hooray for babies!
Misc. lifesavers: Hot baths, ThermaCare Heat Wraps, Ice Packs. The IC Diet has changed my life.
    Didn't work for me:
Detrol LA, Amitryptiline, Morphine, Percocet, TENS unit, Interferential Pain Stimulator Unit, Hypogastric Plexus Nerve Block
    IC (Mod-Severe) since 1996

UPDATE: 5/21/08 Pregnancy and breastfeeding afterwards have alleviated my IC symptoms more than anything, EVER. Most days are 100% pain free & I now have normal frequency (as long as I take these 3 meds).

i'm currently pregnant with my 2nd baby and i don't take pre-natal vitamins because they cause a massive flare up....i instead try to eat a diet that is rich in all the vitamins that are important for pregnancy....

so eat beans all day.....the real natural folic acid is better than the pill form anyways!!

also when you do get pregnant you may be plesently suprised that your IC goes into remission during your pregnancy and possibly for a long time after....it has for me so far (minus the 1st trimester but that was b/c i had awful morning sickness and urine so concentrated it should have been deemed lethal....but that is rare) which has helped in eating some of the not so good foods on the IC diet to get the vitamins i need!

    Meds i'm currently taking:
    Lortab as needed for pain

    Meds that did not help:
    Detrol LA
    Lexapro (caused urgency)
Amatryptaline 10mg once a day (helped IC but made me feel like CRAP)
