  • Articles on Herbs & Supplements

I have had IC for a couple of years now and I'm 21 weeks pregnant. I've been on quite a few medications over the two years. Now that I'm pregnant, there are some that I can't take and some that I won't take. After I delivery the baby, I do plan to breastfeed and my doctor told me no on Elmiron. So, I'm interest in looking at marshmallow root to begin taking now and through breastfeeding. I asked my OB if he would look over the material on marshmallow root and help me evaluate whether it would be a good option for me. There is a lot of information out there, but I find myself questioning the reliability of the source. I was wondering if anyone can point out some good and reliable sources. I really appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Cherie

I have several books regarding herbs. One important thing to remember is that herbal remedies are medications. Your doctor is your best source of information.

I can't help you with herb information, but I do agree with Donna that talking to your doctor would be good.

Are you having IC pain while pregnant? I have a 5-month-old daughter. My IC basically went into remission while pregnant and has stayed that way while breastfeeding. Anyway, I guess my point is that if you're feeling better now, then you may continue to do so while breastfeeding, too. My plan was to breastfeed as long as I could without having to go back on my meds. That hasn't been an issue for me, though. Again, though, those are my experiences. As we all know, everyone with IC is so different!

You might want to talk with someone from the La Leche organization --- they are very good in helping people with breast feeding.

This is my fifth pregnancy, but the first one with IC. I wasn't having an IC pain with this pregnancy until 3 weeks ago. The pain that I'm having right now isn't necessarily the worse IC pain that I've had, but I do hurt.

My OB was the person to diagnose my IC and he is the one that's been managing it for the past two years. I wouldn't say that he's an expert in the area, but he's fairly knowledgeable. I make recommendation to him on things that I think might be an option for me and I usually take it to him or send him an email. He usually evaluates it, gives his thoughts and we make a decision from there. He also does the same.

The articles or sources on marshmallow root that I'm looking for will be going to him to see if this is even an option right now. There seems to be several claims out there that say it's safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. I'm just trying to find sources to include in my email to him.

My OB told me to give it a try, but he seem to doubt it would help. He was right. I did nurse while taking it and didn't have any issues from the marshmallow root. I ultimately ended up taking Elmiron and doing bladder instills while nursing because that was the only thing that seem to help. My IC was pretty bad for a time after I delivered my son.

Not sure if this will help or not, but my son is now 5 years old. Healthy as a horse and doesn't have any issues at all from all the medications and/or supplements that I took during pregnancy or while nursing him. Shortly after I posted that initial message, I ended up with pneumonia. Between the pneumonia and IC issues during pregnancy, I counted over 20 medication that I took. By the grace of God, he is perfectly healthy child today.

Thank you for getting back to me. I would ultimately get back on my elmiron but my urologist is not very helpful and says I can't use it while nursing. I then checked with a nurse at my ob office, she also didn't know what to tell me. So now I have a call in to my daughter's ped to see what she says about it. How old was your little one when you started the elmiron while nursing?

Re: Articles on Herbs & Supplements

I was diagnosed with IC back in January 2008 and started using Elmiron at that time. I took it all the way through pregnancy and then stopped briefly right after I gave birth. I was told similarly what you were told that you couldn't take it and nurse. I was in quite a bit of pain and I really wanted back on the Elmiron. I can't recall how long I was off Elmiron after giving birth, but it was not long. Maybe a few weeks. I found out that Elmiron had a rating of a B. I took the information back to my OB and he told me to go ahead and go back on it. I have always taken 2 pills in the morning and 2 in the evening and that is what I took while nursing. I can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure I ran it by my son's pediatrician too. Since it was rated B, she didn't have a problem with me taking it too.
