  • IC pain and pregnancy

Hi..I'm new to this forum. I've had IC for almost 25 years and I'm 20 weeks pregnant. I was hoping my IC would get better during pregnancy, but the urgency, frequency, and pain have been much worse and are not letting up. Has anyone else experienced this? How did you treat IC during pregnancy?

I responded to your post on another thread, but just wanted to add a warm to the IC Network.

Hi Jordan, I'm currently 26 weeks pregnant and have had the same symptoms as you since week 20. My doctor allowed me to go back on Elmiron and Amitriptyline. I'm just waiting for them to work. Have you found any relief this past week? It's terrible and making me hate being pregnant.

Hi Kellyjou, I'm sorry you're going through the same thing. I'm on flexeril (which doesn't do much) and after breaking down in tears at my urologist's office a few weeks ago he gave me a 3 day supply of hydrocodone to last 2-3 weeks. I hope I can get another script. I brought in a bladder log. I've been going over 50 times a day since I became pregnant. Unfortunately, the small amount of pain meds has been the only thing that's given me a little bit of temporary relief. I've also tried doing installations again, which haven't helped. I completely understand. I was looking forward to becoming pregnant, but I've been miserable. I've also been drinking PH water, taking prelief, meditating, and doing physical therapy. Nothing seems to help. For weeks and weeks I kept waiting to get further into my second trimester, hoping the IC would subside. Please keep me posted on what's going on with you.

This may be a dumb question, but what symptoms does the pain meds help with. I have really bad bladder pressure with the urgency. Does it help that? I never understood what "pain" was for some IC patients because for me pain is the pressure.

That's not a dumb question at all. I remember asking the same thing years ago when I was talking to my nurse practitioner. She said that the constant pressure is a form of pain. I also get burning pains (like a hot poker in my bladder) and sharp shooting pains (I've been told that's my pelvic floor spasming, but I'm not sure. The pain meds seem to dull the pain enough so that I'm not running to the bathroom constantly. Although now that I'm getting into my third trimester my bladder seems more unhappy than ever and not much calms it down. Tofranil helped with the pain, urgency, and frequency also. I was on that for years but had to get off of it because I developed pigmentary glaucoma and tofranil can up the pressure in my eyes. Thankfully they caught the glaucoma before it did much damage. Have you gotten any relief?

Thank you for your response! That helps a lot. I have the pressure and sharp pains in my urethra. I can't say that I'm any better. Still on the Elmiron and Amitriptyline. Idk if it will kick in though. I'm in the third trimester now and all she does is kick and punch me in the bladder area! I'm just hoping this gets better when I have her. How was your IC before pregnancy?

My pleasure and I'm glad. I'm having a girl too and my bladder has been unhappy throughout the entire pregnancy. How much longer do you have until your due date? I still have about 3 months and 3 weeks and it's really dragging because of the pain. I hope we both feel better after the pregnancy. I haven't felt this bad since I initially got sick with IC and they were trying to diagnose me. Before the pregnancy the IC was bad, but I could function most of the time with meds. It's gotten much worse. I was going to the bathroom (or trying to go) about 20-30 times a day before I got pregnant. Now it's 50 plus times a day. How was your IC before pregnancy? Also, maybe after pregnancy if the elmiron still isn't working please take into consideration that there is new data suggesting that elmiron can harm your eyesight. In fact they're linking it to pigmentary glaucoma (wonder if that's why I got it). I was on Elmiron for years and I don't think it really helped me. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I recently received an article from the IC network about this. Maybe you did too. I just wanted to make sure you knew.

You might want to keep a detailed diary for a while --- there are body changes during pregnancy and there might be things that bother you now that never did before. I'm so sorry you're having a difficult time.
