  • Short Luteal Phase

    Hi,

I am recently diagnosed with moderate to severe IC and I am now also suspected of short luteal phase. I've been trying to concieve for almost a year now; of course, still no good news. I had tried taking Vitamin B6 100mg first then reduced to 50mg, but it had given me a bad flare. I've also stopped taking the prenatal vitamins after reading the forum boards as there are several ingredients are the "flare agents". However, I have to say that take 1 month of Vitamin B6 did help me extend my luteal phase from 4 days to now about 6-7 days. Yet, that was before I received my official diagnosis of my bladder problem. Now I just don't have the gut to go back and take it.

The only thing I've not tried is progesterone cream. Has anyone tried using the cream to extend luteal phase problem? Did it work at all?

I also read an old thread (2006) from this ICN here and it seems like many treatments offered to treat luteal phase deficiency are not really suitable for IC patients....

I am desperate to see if anyone has any more updated methods to treat short luteal problem with IC.

Thank you so much for sharing in advance.

I have done a ton of reading on this due to a luteal phase on the very short side of normal. (10 days). I have managed to get pregnant twice, but have lost both pregnancies. The second pregnancy I was put on progesterone pills and they didn't flare me. I don't know if this would be like the cream?

I have also read on here that SOME IC'ers can take Vitex. I plan to try that I think (little bit scared!), when I start trying to conceive again this winter.
    Symtoms started July 2010.

I have IC and a short luteal phase and my OB/GYN (who is also a urologist) has put me on Clomid to try and tighten up my cycle however it has made me flare TERRIBLY. I'd love to hear about any other options for sorting out a short luteal phase such as this cream. I've been trying to conceive for eighteen months and am at the point of giving up after such a terrible flare with the latest round of Clomid. The OB/GYN recently doubled my dose as my luteal phase hasn't been fixed yet.

Ugh, I hate hearing that Clomid flares you. I think I'm starting on that next month. Not looking forward to it now!

I have been on Vitex for a full month now, and it hasn't flared me- I have had to go fully back on the diet while I've been on it though- no more eating chocolate and drinking beer! I got a little "twingey" when I did. My luteal phase was no longer this month, but I read it can take up to 3 months to work.

Hopefully you'll have a different experience to me. It always astounds me how differently people can react to certain things. And my IC has always been heavily influenced by my menstrual cycle. I'm going to look up this Vitex thing now, so thanks for the tip.

I have a short luteal phase also and my Dr. has me on progesterone pills from day 15-30 of my cycle. (I have a 31 day cycle) My husband and I haven't been preventing anything for 3 1/2 years now and just started REALLY trying in the last 6 months. Has anyone had a short luteal phase and also found out they're not ovulating? Are there other blood test I should ask my Dr. to do? My husband and I want a child so bad and we're not telling family and friends we're trying so we don't constantly hear the "Are you pregnant yet?" question. So any advice on how to cope with this would be nice too.

                Short Luteal Phase with IC

                Hello all!

I also have a short luteal phase issue and mild to moderate IC. I've been on B-6 for months with no issues, but this month I added Evening Primrose Oil to try to straighten out my hormones and get more fertile CM. That seems to be making me flare a little, probably because it causes mild uterine contractions (it's not so bad that I'll stop taking it--it really does make epic CM!). My doctor has me on progesterone pills after ovulation, but I'm getting a period even before I finish the pills, so I'm thinking of dropping the progesterone and trying vitex next month. Glad to hear it's not causing too many flares!

I'm really interested in what I've been reading about pelvic floor dysfunction and am going to pursue whatever at-home exercises I can try. One physical therapy site (here: http://www.healing-in-motion.com/pelvic-rehabilitation) mentioned infertility can be related to pelvic-area inflammation and scarring (that's IC for sure!) and that exercises can help. Kind of excited to get started!

To girlwithic on the "are you pregnant yet??" question from family and friends: I know how you feel! People don't realize how insensitive that question is if you are struggling to get pregnant. When I get asked when we're going to have kids, I say "I dunno, talk to my uterus!" This seems to be a somewhat lighthearted way to say "I really don't want to talk about this with you."

                -Kate
