  • Breastfeeding & IC Meds

I am breastfeeding a 7 month old baby. I was diagnosed with IC when my baby was about 3 months old. My IC symtoms began during my first trimester. The Dr. prescribed Elavil, Atarax, and Elmiron. My Dr., the pediatrician, and the lactation consultant have all agreed that these meds are ok to take while breastfeeding. I am still wary of taking them while breastfeeding, but I am concerned about weaning because my baby doesn't take bottles. Has anyone else had any experience with breastfeeding & IC? Did you take meds? My pain has gotten worse recently, and I am considering taking all of these meds.

Also, do you know of anyone whose IC symptoms began during pregnancy? What would have caused it?

    Thanks, Lori

I am wondering same question with DSMO. Online med sheets don't say much. I was told to pump and dump right after or up to 4 hours that led me to more questions.

The best suggestion I can think of is to check with your doctor. I would have some concern about DMSO --- I know when I was having it instilled, I could taste it, which tells me it was probably penetrating my tissues.

I take Elmiron and breastfeed currently. Pediatrician has no problem with it. One concern I would have with Elavil is that it might dry up supply with its anticholinergic side effects. I guess atarax could do that too. But I am not speaking from experince in regards to those two.
