    Possible UTI, no access to a doctor until tuesday, what should I do?

    I posted on the IC flares board a few days ago talking about a possible stubborn IC flare that started on the 14th but I guess what I thought was an IC flare is in fact a UTI, the problem is there's no way for me to have access to a doctor until tuesday. I've been having more urgency, pain and frequency for close to a week and a half. I thought it was an IC flare and maybe it was but I didn't eat anything that would make me flare, I had a really stressful situation on the 14th, right before the flare stared, that situation caused me a lot of anxiety and I thought it was an anxiety induced flare. I would wake up during the night to pee many times like I always do, I was able to sleep and I just had more urgency, frequency and some discomfort. I had some days where I felt a little better, yesterday and the day before I thought I was almost fine, still had a weird feeling on my bladder, still had the urgency and frequency but that's something I've been dealing with for 10 years. I was trying to follow the diet even more strictly hoping it would go away. Yesterday, around dinner time I felt sharp pains in my urethra and after that an awful feeling of urgency that doesn't go away, I can't get any relief, I have a hard time peeing and only small amounts come out. It's stopping me from sleeping, I'm going insane from the lack of sleep and a few hours ago I saw blood on my toilet paper when I wiped, not a lot but a tiny bit. 10 minutes ago the same thing happened. My pee also smells really bad but it has been smelling like that for at least a month and a half now. My question is, I have a bottle of Macrobid that was prescribed about less than two months ago when I visited a doctor complaining of a flare that wouldn't go away. She didn't test my urine but prescribed Macrobid just in case because she saw in the records that I had taken Macrobid for previous infections. I managed to get better and didn't even start the Macrobid. Now I'm thinking about taking it like she prescribed, every 8h. Should I do it? The last time I had a uti I let it go for two days and I ended up having to stay a night in the hospital because I was having urinary retention probably caused by the uti. Is taking the Macrobid the lesser of two evils? I really don't know what to do, I hate taking antibiotics because they make me feel sick and throw up but I also don't want to leave a uti untreated. I'm in so much pain and so sleep deprived. This is a nightmare, the last time I had a uti it took me almost three months to completely recover, can't believe this is happening again.

    I would try taking that. You really need to go to a doctor and have a urine analysis and culture. If I"m not mistaken the analysis only takes a few hours and can tell by raising flags if you have an infection. Then the culture takes several days to understand what type of bacteria you have. They have different anti-biotics for different types of bacteria. I had a urinary tract infection pretty recently from a rough instillation. I wouldn't delay. Maybe go to an urgent care. I"m sure they can do a fast urinalysis and send the urine for culture test.

      In my country there are no urgent cares. You have the hospital which is far and I have no means of transportation until tuesday. There's really no way for me to be seen by a doctor until then. I decided to take the macrobid, took the first one at 1:40am. I'm really scared because I firmly believe I got IC because of a uti that was left untreated for too long and damaged my bladder leaving me with severe IC, the thought of another uti damaging my bladder even more scares me to death. I already go through so much with my IC as it is, if it gets worse I believe I won't survive. Treatments don't work on me, the only thing that worked in these 10 years was the diet but I still struggle with severe frequency and my flares are so painful I can't even describe it.

        I think it would be a good idea to telephone your doctor or emergency room for advice --- there may be other things you can do in addition to the antibiotic.

          My Uro sent out a urine specimen and it came back with an E-Coli infection. I have been suffering with pain and frequency for about 10 days. I was due for an Elmiron instill, but has canceled it now that I have this infection. I am told this is very common. I started Macrobid today.
          I have read that E-coli does not always respond to antibiotics. The pharmacist said that e-coli can affect the bladder - new to me.
          Anyone else had this problem?

            I think it's good that they did a culture --- usually when they do that, they are able to prescribe an effective antibiotic for the specific infection. I have read that e-coli is commonly the culprit in bladder infections. Just be sure to complete the entire prescription, even if the symptoms go away.
