  • Dry Mouth

Hi - I've recently started taking Elmiron, Atarax, and Neurontin along with a host of other meds including Celexa and Singulair. I've been having a lot of problems with dry mouth, especially last night. I kept waking up because my mouth was so dry. Any suggestions? Thanks guys - Kris

My best suggestion is to call your physician and ask about this. There are some medications that cause the dry mouth you describe. I have had an extremely dry mouth from some meds --- my mouth got so dry on one that my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth until I got some water in there. My solution was to get a different medication.

I was recently on a medication that caused dry mouth. I also would wake up with my tounge stuck to the roof of my mouth. During the day I would try to sip on water or suck on hard candies (not too often with the candy, can cause tooth decay). I bought a humidifier for nighttime, but stopped the medication before I tried the humidifier.

If you aren't able to switch medications, there are toothpastes, mouthwashes, and gum designed to stimulate saliva in your mouth to ease the dryness. If your doctor doesn't know about them your dentist should. My dentist prescribed a flouride toothpaste for a different problem, but it also seemed to help cut down on the overnight dryness of my mouth.
