I had no idea that this was a side effect of any of our medicines. I have been suffering w/ extremely dry eyes lately. I can hardly wear my contacts any more. Is it the elmiron? atarax? What do you guys use for this? Thanks!Alyson

Alyson, I don't have contacts but I do wear glasses and last month when I went to my eye specialist she said my eyes were so dry and to start using Genteal or something similar. It seems to be really helping mine. Hope that helps you. Hugs

Hi Alyson. When i take my Urised for a while i feel like my contacts are going to crumble out of my eyes
. But i don't have to take it constantly.
You could call your eye doctor and ask if there are any special drops that you could use with or before you put your lenses in.
There are several over the counter drops but not any good ones really for contacts, you probably know that huh? I hate wearing my glasses, i don't know if your like me and you won't unless you have to. But, drink plenty of water and see if the eye doc has anything...and let me know if there is anything and how good it works

Thanks for the responses! I have been using those "rewetting" drops, but they really aren't enough for this dryness. I will call my eye doc and let you guys know if I find some miracle drops! Also, NB, yes, I'm like you, I don't like wearing my glasses, but I also don't like not being able to see I'll keep ya posted! AlysonAlyson

aLYSON- I too have severely dry eyes. I can no longer wear my contacts. My eyes are terrible at night. I found out about a supplement from someone on this website. It is called hydroeye. It is amazing. I used to get up in the middle of the night and had to put genteel in my eyes because my lids were stuck to my eyeballs. It hurt so bad. Since I have been taking this I no longer have to use drops. -BLESSINGS AND HOPE- VICKIBlessings and Hope

A word of caution --- be sure that if you use over the counter eye drops you avoid the kinds that say they are for inflammation. We have an ophthalmologist in the family and he told me to use only artificial tears unless my ophthal. prescribes something else. He said the ones that say they fight inflammation can so easily rebound, causing more inflammation.

Last year I had the same problems with my eyes being extremely dry. It was to the point where I couldn't stand to wear makeup. My primary physican referred me to an opthamologist who did the dry eye test and found I had extremely dry eyes. From there he inserted punctal plugs into the ducts of my eyes. I couldn't believe the difference they made. He also gave me zaditor eye drops since I have some allergies too. Between the two my eyes are so much better. I don't even know the plugs are in my eyes.Karen

Alyson,
I too wear contacts but with IC it just did not work. I worked with an eye specialist whom was a jerk and would not keep trying with me. I was married last June 2001 and I did NOT want to wear my glasses to see my husband as I walked down the aisle! I saw eye 2 specialits whom both gave up on me, and then I went to lenscrafters in the mall and they said........."we will keep on trying until we find you a pair of contacts that you can comfortably wear, even if we go through them all." And that's what we did. I tried so many I can't name them all but all in all it ended up working out for my wedding and now I never wear my glasses again. It just took some understanding doctors to listen to me and be willing to help.
I use 1-day ACUVUE by Johnson and Johnson
They are daily contacts that you use once a day and then throw them out. They are expensive but well worth it and...you can wear them 2 days in row if you need to, some people can stretch them out more but I advise against that. I use them daily unless I am in a bind with money and then I use them 2 days in a row and toss.
You can use any type of rewetting drops on them but make sure they are for contacts. Most come in contact friendly versions.
I had really really bad IC so I know how it is with the dry eyes. I could not drink anything not even a drop of water, so I had no way to keep my eyes moist but these contacts worked even with my sandpaper eyes. I have since had my bladder taken out but I still wear my Acuvue 1-A days!
I hope you find some that work for you!

I have a very big problem with dry eyes
I was borned with a cyst in my left eye, and is a very rare kind of cyst. When I was 16 I turned my eyes, and the cyst took out from my eye, and it had hair and a red vein, belive me that was horrible!!, so I had my first surgery
The dr. was a very stupid person, because he removed my lachrymal gland, and since that date, I have completly dry my eye
I had a lot of ulcers in my cornea, and the pain was insoportable, the pain is like if you have a wound bleeding and you put lemon!!. I prefer bladder pain that eye pain!!
For several years my eye was closed, and I couldn´t work or drive, and my second child was a baby, so I couldn´t take care good!
In 1992, I had been operated 5 times, and I was really tired!, I looked aprox 1,000,000 dres and nobody could help me
In 1995 I met a militar dr. (In México the militar drs are the best, my uros are militaries too). He put me a contact, he told me to protect my cornea. After that I began with my life again
Of course since I was 16 I have to use artificial tears, and always the same (Naturalag)
In 1997 I had a very big flare!!, oh my God! I was in pain all the day, and my right eye had pain too!, I could´t see even the light, so I had to be in my room all the day (I was this for 6 months)
I met another dr. and I said "Please remove my eye NOW", and he told me ok, but at first I want to do another tests. The first thing he did was change my artificial tears, and he operated again twice
After one year of test (and the test in the eyes are very painfull (??)), I decided to remove my eye, he prepared all for my new eye, and when he told me that every night I had to remove the artifical eye and in the morning put again, I said "NO THANK YOU!!", so he gave me another contact, that I´m using now. Is like acuevue, but shepper and you can use for a month
The name is: SURE/VUE, by Johnson & Johnson
It is 58% water, is for dry eyes!!, and the artifitial tears I wear are: Meticel Ofteno al 0.5% (Hipromelosa)
When I began take Tavor (Ditropan) All my body was dry, so inmediatly went with the dr. to said the side effects of this medicine, he check me and I don´t have problem whit my eye
I can be in Record Guiness, because I´m the only person who have 2 chronic diseaes and more surgeries in her life!!

I thought I could never wear contacts again because of dry eyes. (I also have punctal plugs - which help.) I did some research, and found some information about " Proclear Compatibles." They are especially made for folks who have dry eyes. I am now able to wear contacts a few hours a day as long as I keep drops in my eyes.
