  • IBS and other food allergies

For someone who has a food allergy like peanut butter, soy, gluten, fructose, lactose... How do you know when it is your IBS or the food allergy acting up? I am fructose intolerant but sometimes I can eat a little bit and be ok. Last week I had peach cobbler (with only a little peaches I had maybe 4) and the next day my stomach was really upset. I was getting pains in my stomach. So I went to go poop and it was really hard. I could barely get it out I had to push hard and I didnt want to strain. My stomach started hurting again with the pains and then I went back to the bathroom and I had explosive diarrhea. My stomach will tense up and make contractions. Is this characteristic of IBS or a food intolerance. I have never had bad episodes like this and now it seems like they are every week to two weeks...

It sounds like you have as many food issues as do. Gluten, etc. I haven't been tested for fructose, but it seems like more bowel issues all the time. This has been scary since I don't ever know where they are coming from. Gluten was the worst, I kept getting worse and worse with pain and didn't know why until I stopped eating it. I also have trouble with dairy. I couldn't ever eat a peach because that would really hurt my bladder, but didn't used to hurt my intestines. This has turned my body upside down and crazy

Your right, yours sounds like either. I was thinking IBS, but also had this when I tried bread (rice) and I have difficulty with yeast too. I'm sorry I wish I had a better answer for you. Right now I am so constipated and have tried metamucil natural (bloating, gas only), Magnesium (many kinds) they all cause bladder pain, Miralax (bladder pain), Acacia (spelling?) didn't work for me. Anything that causes diarrhea will cause severe bladder pain as well. I can't do colace either. I don't know what to try next, but this is really bad.

Allergy vs intolerance pretty hard to tell which, but both mean you can't eat it.

I have lots of food allergies, but it effects my breathing for the most part, and or ab spasams. My Dr. told me if I get exposed or eat something I am allergic too it can take up to 3 weeks to clear your system.

So if I stay away from everything I sometimes can get away with eatting a little bit of some of my allergens. But at times I can be near it fr eg. I was assured by a waitress that the butter she had brought me to drip my shrimp into had no garlic in it, she was wrong, I dip justthe tip into the butter touched my tounge and spit it out right away, wipped my tounge off with the napkin, swished my mouth out with water all before swallowing. I still had a full blown allergic reaction. Somr of my reactions are worse than others, not dependant upon how much I ate.

I have had reactions even when my husband has cooked for me, and he is really carefull, never did figure that one out. Sometimes it takes a couple of days eatting something before I react to it.

A Dr. once explianed to me that if you consider your body as a glass, if it is 1/2 full you can deal with a bit more water being added to it, but if it is already full and you add a bit more it over flows.

I took flowmax for retention because of IC, it didn't work for me, it made the retention worse I was on it for about 10 days, so then a couple of months later they tried me on another med in the same class of drug, it seemed to be better for the retention, it did not make it better, but not worse either. after a few days all of a sudden my heart was racing and I couldn't breath, and turned out to be allergic to it. Unlike having a reaction to food, for food I ussally have to take 2 benadryl once or twice atfirst sign, for this I took the benadryl at first sign it did not help, I ended up having to take benadryl every four hours for 5 days, because it was a slow release medand thats how long it takes to clear your system, this required 2 trips to ER.

Just thought I would share my allergy expirences. MG
