I vaguely remember someone posting a recipe for constipation created by their doctor made of flax seed and something else - a kind of oil maybe. Does anyone remember it or does anyone have a good remedy for severe, and I mean severe, constipation? Miralax has been tried but brings with it its own set of problems. Thanks so much. Ratchada

I had a terrible time with constipation until I started taking Aloe Vera for my bladder. Completely changed things around in a very quick time.I take 2 capsules 3 times a day.SueComment

Another option I've found useful is Shiatsu. I just have a few copies of pages of self-massage I can do, and it gets the gut moving. I didn't think it was going to really work, but it was surprisingly helpful. My sister, who is a P.T., looked up the information for me.IC & fibromyalgia since ~'77. Osteoarthritis since ~'88. Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (autoimmune blood disease) since '96. IBS for who knows how long. Interstim implant 2/04, revised 6/06, replaced 11/12 & again in 9/17. Antibodies to thyroid since at least '92 (finally diagnosed & treated 1/06). Asthma & vocal cord dysfunction 12/06. Hypoglycemia '07. Perimenopausal at 37, menopause at 45. Pituitary & adrenal failure. Osteopenia. Grade 3 sacral fracture by S3-S4 at age 12, healed 14mm out of place.Comment

On the subject of constipation, I also suffer
with it fairly bad as well. I also have IBS which came after my IC diagnosis, ann boy oh boy does it hurt sometimes, and id especially painfull when you conbine it with IC bladder flares, or can cause a IC baldder flare if you are constipated as I found out. When ever I try a product to get my bowels moving the pain it causes is worse then it was before. What I have been useing for years now is called Senokot with stool softner. You can take up to 3 or 4 pills everyday. Its all natural as the Sena leaf grows and is picked and dryed. I also used mineral oil which also helps. I think the key is to alternate the products you take as our body becomes used to one after awhile. And of coarse drinking lots of water, and moving around such as walks. I also heard of that thing you do with rubbing your abdomin in order to move the stool down and soften it. Geez, as if IC wasn't enough. I also heard that antihistimines can cause constipation which I never knew as I take them to help with bladder. One old fashion way is eating a bowel of Oatmeal porriage once a day, and it does work.
Hope this works or helps.Comment

Speaking of oatmeal...I'd like to recommend that too. When I was pregnant, my IBS had me in constipation the whole time. Of course, being pregnant you're limited on what you can do. I ate oatmeal twice a day and took a stool softener every day and it helped quite a bit.
IBS is such a tricky thing though...it seems that what sometimes gives me diarrhea will make me constipated other times. Weird.
I hope things start working better for you soon. Constipation is so uncomfortable, I'd rather be in a diarrhea stage any day. :-)

Hi all,
This is what my doctor recommended I try. I have been too lazy to make it but he swears by it.
1 1/2 cups pitted prunes
1/2 cup All Bran
1 cup applesauce
1 cup prune juice
Blend together using a blender . Start with 1/4 cup every morning. Increase as needed to 1/4 cup 2-3 times a day.
Obviously don't try this if apples are a trigger for your ic. They don't seem to bother me at all.Comment

Kashi Go Lean cereals have 9 grams of fiber and was recommended by my gastro for IBS w/ constipation. My favorite is the granola but there are a variety within the brand. I also add blueberries on top on days that I am not flaring.
PS The soy ones were not very good

steady diet of shreaded wheat works great. takes a few days to notice that it is really working, but once you get used to it and eat some everyday it helps to keep me regular. i like the frosted mini-wheats personally. a little sugar goes a long way with that stuff. also drinking pedialyte helps keep electrolytes balanced so that you don't get too much water in your system. people that get constipated often start to drink too much of the wrong fluids and then before you know it you have diahrrea. hope it helpsComment

Severe IBS
I had severe IBS all my life. I finally got rid of it by going on a strict diet of chicken and rice. I had tried metamucil, but it just bloated like a cow. This is because I later found out that I am allergic to wheat. Every time I eat it, I stop up for days followed by a powerful and painful blowout (not fun).
I am always afraid to use laxatives or other treatments because they are only temporary and I am back to even worse IBS after they are over.
I found that about a cup of rice in my daily routine and avoiding spices, msg and preservatives was the best treatment. What a difference. My personality even changed. I now live in PEACE! Jala.Comment
