I have heard that you shouldn't take Diflucan longer than 6 months or it will cause liver damage. The pharmacist CVS said that statement is recommended for people who take it every day not once a week for 6 months. I called the manufacturer and they said everybody is different and to get my liver enyzmes checked. I was just curious if anybody had some feedback on this. I am mad at my doctor for never letting me know or having me get some bloodwork to make sure it is ok.

I've been taking Diflucan once per week since late October w/o any liver issues. My liver function test (i have this done due to also being on Elmiron) shows my levels in the high-normal range. My Dr's (UROGYN and URO) test my levels every 4 months via a simple blood test. I also-last week-had an ultrasound done of my right kidney, liver, gallbladder and pancreas (due to pain on my right side/back) and everything looked completely normal.
From my understanding should liver function appear abnormal, the solution is to either lower the dosage or stop the medication all together and within a few weeks liver function returns to normal. The chances of anything permanent happening to the ilver by taking Diflucan on a regular basis is extremely rare.
Saying all of that, if I were in your situation I would demand that the Dr check liver function just to err on the side of caution.
take care, dear

Diane said it all; Diflucan very rarely damages the liver, it is wise and prudent to have liver enzymes monitered three times a year when on any medication be it a statin drug, Elmiron, or anything else. Diflucan is Rxed many times on a daily and monthly basis for severe yeast infestation.
fortunately here in AZ we just go to the grocery store pharmacy dep. every month or so and order our own lab tests for 30.00, so its easy to keep track of your blood levels of almost anything.

Long term diflucan
I've been taking diflucan 200mg duirng yeast infections 4-5 days in a row.
There were times I took 200mg daily for 12 days. But never more than that. Per my Dr he could give me my bodys weight equivalent in diflucan and wont kill the yeast.
I kind of gave up on diflucan but I'm wondering if it helps to take it daily or once a week for months?
To the ones that were on that regime, did it help?Laser cervical surgery after abnormal pap (moderate dysplasia) in 3/2004
UTIs since mid 2004
Recurrent yeast infections since mid 2005
IC dx 3/2006
V V dx 12/2006
Other conditions: IBS, allergies, dry eyes.

Probiotics Femdophilus or other brands
Gy-Na-Tren for yeast infections (started using it as needed since 2010)
Other Rx:Omeprazole 20mg; benadryl as needed, Restasis
Past Meds and why I stopped them:
Elmiron: March to September 2006: headaches
Lyrica:2 weeks in 2006: headaches

Femcon Fe (2/07 to 10/07):caused spotting/bleeding

If Diflucan is not clearing up your yeast infection; and if you have a physician verified yeast infection as opposed to a self diagnosed one, then it is pretty obvious to me that the type of Candida you have is resistant to Diflucan. There are many members of the Candida family and some of them do not react to Diflucan.
Has anyone grown a culture?

Diflucan has been a complete success for me personally. I wasnt even aware of having an issue until my UROGYN confirmed it--it wasnt until after the medication started to work did I realize I had been suffering with the problem and had just chalked the symptoms up to being "normal" for me.
Take care

HI! I'm on 100mg Diflucan right now for 15 days because of systemic yeast that we think is being caused by the large amounts of Nexium and Ranitidine that I take for my Barrett's Esophagus. I'm not sure what the next step will be if this doesn't work because other yeast meds (pills) makes my esophagus raw. But so far I haven't had any side effects from Diflucan.
