  • is this GERD, stomach ulcer, "just" heartburn

    Hey everyone,

    I know this isn't really IC related at all, but I was wondering if anyone could help me out here.

    For the last 2 days I have been in having severe heatburn. The pain goes all the way from my stomach (bellybutton area) up to my breastbone. Antacids haven't helped in the least bit. I've tried a few different kinds, been popping them like candy. No relief at all. I'm quite nauteous too. I've had heatburn before, but nothing this bad or long lasting.

    If the pain is radiating from my stomach, does that mean it could be an ulcer? I can't even sit up straight, I've spent all day hunched over at a 90 degree angle, or sleeping. Murder on the back!

    What could this be? Is it just heartburn or something else?

    This stinks! It's my birthday today, and I've spent it in bed. On a positive note, my IC hasn't been bothering me as much (not because it's any better, but because I have a new more pressing pain).

    My IC story- diagnosed at age 15 (Feb 2004), after approx. 6 mos of symptoms. Went into near complete remission following hydrodistention and introduction of meds. Feeling so good that I started skipping meds (bad idea). 1 week flare (May 2006). New flare November 2006-present.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    My triggers- I'm not sure about food triggers, just started IC diet but so far doesn't seem to be doing much. Stress is a big trigger for me though. Both flares this year came during stressful times. I think that stress reduction will help me immensely (last flare went AWAY during vacation in Mexico when I was drinking margaritas like they were water;P).
    Start of IC symptoms- Summer 2003 (after a UTI)
    Dx- February 2004, after hydrodistension (ouch!)
    Current treatments- Amytriptyline (25mg), Hydroxizine (25mg), MSM w/Glucosamine (1000mg,3x/day), quercetin (500mg, 2x/day), trying to stick to IC diet, prelief as needed.
    Previous treatments- Amytriptyline (10mg), Hydroxizine (10mg), Alesse (HBC)
    You really need to see your doctor. And if it gets any worse at all, a trip to emergency room or an urgent care center today would be a good idea. Please don't let this go on.
    And let me know what you find out.
    Warm hugs,
    Donna
    Stay safe
      I am sorry you are in so much pain with the heartburn. First, are any of the meds your on known to upset the tum? For instance, if you are taking any anticholernergic meds like elavil, or urelle, or detrol, these can cause alot of issues with the stomach since it slows everything down to a snails pace. Therefore food just sits in the tum for a long time and does not digest as good. This could cause heartburn issues.
      I would call your doctor and let him or her know what is going on, and possibly see a gastroenterologist if this does not get better. Hope you feel better soon.
        I suggest you call your Doc asap .If its acid reflux , it would be causing a burning sensation up to your throat. You will need perscription meds to control it & protect your stomach. Hope you feel better soon!
          I get terrible heartburn - at least I used to. It was so bad I felt I was having a heart attack. I found out that taking a few good slugs on a bottle of liquid Gaviscon (sp?) cleared it up asap.
          It has to be the liquid for the real bad heartburn. The old adage goes that after you take 2 large tablespoons - if it doesn't take the pain away instantly - go to the ER as you are having a heart attack.
          Rules to follow if you have GERD:
          Always sleep on your left side.
          Keep your pillows up high.
          Don't eat anything 3 hours before you go to bed.
          Avoid acidic things like alcohol, tea, coffee, spicey, etc.
          I, also, found that certain yoga poses make it worse like the cobra and the bridge. Hope this helps and you are ok.
              Hi everyone!
              Thanks so much for your concern.
              I'm feeling much better now.
              I went to the walk-in clinic today and saw a really nice doctor (this is a shocker for me lol). He gave me some prescription acid medication (prevacid), and within hours I felt much better. I would now say I feel 80% better! I just need to take them for the next 2 weeks and avoid spicy/acidic food and drinks and hopefully it should resolve itself. He said I probably just had some short-term gastritis (heartburn) caused by something I ate or drank.
              Well duh! I probably should have mentioned that I had gone out drinking on Thursday night (and symptoms arose Friday afternoon). I only had 3 drinks so I didn't really think I had overdone it, but upon second thought I had mixed beer with hard liquor. So this probably caused some kind of explosive reaction in my stomach.
              Luckily my IC does not appear to be diet sensitive (I did an elimination diet for about a month, so I feel I can say this), so I continue to drink and eat spicy/acidy food. Well after this episode, maybe I should reconsider my diet for the sake of my stomach! Alcohol (or nothing for that matter) is worth this pain, I am just so glad I'm feeling better now.
              I managed to go out for dinner for my birthday, and had a great time
              Thanks again for all your concern!
                  HI MIZ,
                  I'm glad you went to the ER and they were able to treat you.
                  Sounds like you are pushing the envelope with drinking and eating spicy stuff.....a word of warning.....the elimination diet worked for you....but IC can and many times gets worse over time.....and eating and drinking the wrong things now might make things many times worse later......or anytime soon.......you just never know with IC......and with GERD. I've been up this morning since 4am with major acid reflux and I have Barrett's esophagus pain(from years of severe acid reflux..with pain like you experienced...so I have pre-cancerous cells in my esophagus because of it. SO PLEASE be careful.....you don't want to end up with that pain all the time......(((HUGS))) Roxie
                    Glad you feeling better...but to anyone else who may feel like they have heart burn described like you....if you don't respond even to prescription antacids...look into IBS...sometimes the gas of IBS can feel similar ...I had both GERD and IBS and it took me a long time to realize how much the IBS was contributing.
                    Anyway...:woohoo: on feeling better!
