Off Lyrica & On Topamax......tell me how you do it on it, please!

    Off Lyrica & On Topamax......tell me how you do it on it, please!

    I saw my Rheumatologist today.....and I'm going for more......never ending.....tests! He took me off the Lyrica because I've gained 12 pounds on it in 4 months! He put me on Topamax (for a month to see how I do).
    He says I have Neuropathy and Myopathy but it's not caused by the things normally related to Neuropathy and Myopathy. He thinks it's caused because of Gastric Bypass surgery.......but most of my vitamin levels are fine (that's what usually causes Neuropathy after Gastric Bypass) He thinks it's because my 'bottom stomach' is refluxing and causing my IBS to flare and in turn causing my food to go through my body quickly and causing a type of 'dumping syndrome' that's causing my Carnintine level to drop. UGH!!!!!! I'm SO tired of tests!
    Anyway......if you have tried Topamax please let me know if it's caused you IC pain in any way or other health problems. I'm really hoping it helps me with my pain....and helps me sleep. Thanks all.....you're great! Roxie

    Collagin"Durasphere" injections for urethra
    Gall bladder surgery Aug. 2004
    Gastric Bypass Dec. 2004
    Dx'd: Barrett's Esphogus July 2004
    Dx'd: Vaginal Atrophy 2005
    Bladder surgery 2000
    Dx'd: IBS 2000
    Hysterectomy (fibroids) 1999
    Laminectomy 1989
    Dx'd: Degerative Disk Disorder 1989

    For IC I use Elmiron, Elavil and Freeze dried Aloe Vera (it works likes Elmiron, but naturally)and Azo as needed. I also take Zegerid, Randitine for Barrett's Esophagus. (which causes me to have constant yeast infections!)I take Cymbalta for Neuopathy/Myopathy pain. I use the Climara patch for menopause symptoms. I'm on a very strict diet because of the IC, IBS and Gastric Bypass. I take Primal Defense Probiotics and whole food Iron.
    I no longer have the awful urethral pain! I've been using MSM gel now for 4 mo. and haven't had a flare up or the urethra pain.....it's amazing stuff!!:woohoo:

    I tried Topamax for another condition, and I had a terrible reaction to it. I had a constant "pins and needles" feeling in my hands and feet, and I was so dizzy that my husband would not let me shower alone for fear of me falling and hitting my head on the tub. It did nothing for my IC either.

    BUT -- some people do well on Topamax And, some lucky folks get the nice side effect of weight loss... LOL.

    *Diagnosed with severe IC in 2004
    *Also diagnosed with PFD, fibromyalgia, chronic myofascial pain, IBS, migraines, allergies/asthma, dermatographism
    *Kept trying a million different treatments for all these things until I found what works, and I am doing okay these days with the help of a cocktail of medications and the InterStim, which was first placed in 2007. [I have had 2 revisions - one in 2010 when my battery died and had to be replaced, and one complete replacement (lead and generator) in 2012 after a fall on my stairs caused my lead to move.]
    *Current meds include Atarax (50mg at night), Lyrica (150mg twice a day), Xanax (0.5mg at night and as needed), Zanaflex (4mg at night), hydrocodone (10/325, every 6 hours as needed), Advair, Nasonex, Singulair (10mg at night), oral contraceptives, home instills containing Elmiron and Marcaine (as often as I need to do them).

      Since I could not take Elavil, Topamax has been a life savior for me... I dont know what I would do without it.. It helps so much!! I hope it helps you to.. sending you (((((((((((hugs)))))))))))

      Other Meds: Levlite- Continious Birtcontrol, Micardis-40mg for High Blood Pressure

      Meds I have Tried:
      Topamax,Tofranil, Elmiron, Atarax, Cymbalta, Elavil, Enablex, Detral La, Prydium.
      Lexapro< Bad reaction to this med!
      Intstills, could not continue them due to some kind of reaction after 3rd instill. Tasted the lidocaine in my mouth, tongue and lips went numb then went into what seemed like a panic attack. Shaking, racing heart, tingling face/head, blood pressure shot up..

      Dx With IC in Nov 2006 with Hydro/Cysto
      Hydro/Cysto Caused Bladder to Rupture.

      Other Dxs-Vulvodynia,Fibro, Endo, IBS, HPV, Migraines, Spastic Colon, Mild Dysplasia.

        Hi Rhonda,
        I hope it works for my nerve pain. My dr. started me out on a low dose and said he'll work me up slowly. At least it shouldn't make me gain more weight! lol

          Yes Roxie that is what I was taking the Elavil for I have nerve pain in the clitoris and the Topamax relieves that but a bonus it helps the IC pain to..

            I don't think the Topamax is working for me. I haven't slept in 2 nights...(I have that deer in the head lights feeling)...I'm sick to my stomach and very nervous feeling. I cancelled some tests I was suppose to have today at the hospital because I was afraid to drive this morning. I put in a call to my Rheumatolgoist to see what he thinks I should do. I'm on a low dose.... 2-25mg at night. I think he's going to want me to see a pain management dr. now....ugh! Roxie

              That to me is starting high. I am very sensitive to medicine. I started out at 25mg and even at 25 I got the jittery feeling but it went away in a day or 2 .. There is no way I could of started on 50mg..Im so sorry .. (((((((((hugs))))))))
