  • Epidural Steroid/Help!

HI: It's me again being more confused than ever!
I went back to the Specialists with my MRI x-rays and I was thinking it was gonna be a Spur as he told me he thought it was last week when I was there.Remember I was sent to him cause I have been having soo much pain in my wrist and hand . He said (after taking x-ray) of my hand that he could not see anything wrong with my hand/wrist. Said it was probably coming from my Neck-which he took x-rays at his office of my neck/shoulders. and it showed Alot of arthritis.. but he wanted me to get MRI done on shoulder /neck and I did.
The MRI is showing a Dead Nerve laying on a disk at my neck.... HE wants me to have a:
    Cervical Spinal Epidural Steroid Injection.
The office where I am suppose to have this done has not called me yet to tell me the date I am to do this.
Does anyone know anything about this cervical epidural injection?
He said he does not understand why I haven't had numbness in feet /legs. I told him I do have numbess (misspelled?)- but only at night when I wake up my legs are very numb..or If I am still too long I will get numb.. He said I should not be able to have control of my bowels and I told him I do(so far!) have control of bowels! I am just wondering could this be connected to my Urine control!( which at times I don't have!) toilet
All this is soo scarey to me and I always heard NOT to have Steroids put into your body>!!!
If anybody knows anything about this please give me Advice... Thanks so much....Brenda

I suppose some certain steroids are helpful for our bodies at certain times and within moderations. Or a physician wouldn't use them. I just had a script for steroids when I was sick during Christmas.

I checked around and thought these two web sites might help you a little or prepare you when and if you have the procedure done.

Hugs to you and hope you get some relief soon, Brenda! grouphug

When I was in severe pain with a shoulder (turned out to be spurs), the orthopedist first tried steroid injections into the joint. They did help significantly, but the pain always returned about two weeks later. If the problem had been bursitis, the injection would have lasted much, much longer.

I do agree that steroids should not be used carelessly, there are most definitely conditions that can be helped significantly by using them.

      Sending an encouraging hug,
      Donna

I had three steroid injections, I have spinal stenosis from C4 to C7. I had one arm that was totally numb. It helped a lot. I also take a lot of IV and oral steroids for my asthma. They actually caused my diabetes. Steroids have a lot of side effects, but they WORK GREAT!!! I would be dead from the asthma without them. They gave me my injections in my neck, but they used twilight sleep, and it was not painful at all. Good Luck,

My dad gets those cervical epidural steroid injections for his degenerative disc disease. They are sort of like an epidural for child birth except they contain a steroid and my dad's usually have cortisone and a numbing medicine so he actually gets some pain relief for a few hours. They work wonders for him! Good luck.

I had these done years ago. It was for the IC. I had about 5 which really did not help.
I was put to sleep for it. Really did not feel anything. Woke up easily.
I was just told to try it again which I am going to refuse because I have diabetes and the steroid would make my sugar go up.

I just had a steroid injection given to me to control inflammation and break a cycle of nerve inflammation and muscle spasms which worked for me. My dr. prescribed Diflucan to take to prohibit a yeast infection because she said the steroids can open you up to a yeast infection.

My doctor told me I could have it in his office without twilight sleep, and he would do the injection, and it would hurt some, OR he could do in as an out-patient procedure with twilight sleep AND x-ray so he would get it in the right place. I felt no pain at all. I slept all afternoon afterward's, but I felt great the next day. It really was not painful AT ALL. I know it's always scarry to undergo any new procedure, but really this is not bad, not compared to IC anyway. I will keep you in my prayers as always.

                      Alyssa's Grandma #1,

I was reading this topic and wondered how your epideral steroid injection went??

I had a few in my C 5/6/7 area about 7 years ago, so when I read your postings I just wanted to know how you are feeling.

                            Hi Brenda,

Glad you had a good outcome. Talk to the ordering physician about why more than one was scheduled when you were not having symptoms.

I had 3 epideral steriod injections spread out over 6 months- all 3 were done with no sedation. I had good results with the first and second ESI- my only complaint was that it wore off eventually and my symptoms came back.

The 3rd one was problematic. The dr. inserted the needle and began his injection. I felt a burning sensation down the wrong side (left intead of right). I hollered at him that I thought he missed. I was not a happy camper because I left with symptoms down both sides instead of one.

I would recommend a helpful website bb/support group for neurology/spine issues; it's associated with Mass. General Hospital: http://neuro-mancer.mgh.harvard.edu/...n/Ultimate.cgi [Just click on "S", then scroll down and click on "spinal disorders 3"]

Go ahead a send me a private email if you have other questions. Good luck! Spine issues are not fun. Hugs, Carla
