  • Leaky Gut Syndrome

My uro mentioned this to me as maybe an alternative to being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I am just curious as to what this is and would love to hear experiences. Thanks.

    Jes,
Leaky gut is a inflammation in the gut lining. It's usually associated with autoimmune disease.
Diseases in its category are: Fibro, cronic fatigue syndrome, and there are more.
I suppose that's what your uro meant by an alternative to your fibro.
Like our IC being a defect where the bladder wall is missing its protective lining or there are holes in it...well its got a defect in its intestinal lining.
Well hope I answered something for ya.
    Take care.
    Tons of support,
    Jaime

It confuses me also. (Which isn't too hard.)
Anyway here is a web site if you want it...

Hope you don't have it either.

I found a site in the UK with what looks like a pretty clear explanation of leaky gut --- it's at http://osiris.sunderland.ac.uk/autism/gut.htm

Dr. Crook, author of The Yeast Connection, has a site that explains this, also:

                Kim

                Diagnosed August 2001

Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Effexor (for depression & anxiety)

Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA, Lexapro (for depression & anxiety, but also helped my IC) (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)

I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for about 8 years now.

I have researched Leaky Gut Theory.

It is an 'alternative' diagnosis and is not usually accepted by the medical profession.

Here goes for the 'official explanation':

Leaky gut is an inflamatory condition in which intestinal epilethial tissues lose their integrity and junctions between cells become semi permiable, allowing abnormal reabsorbtion of intestinal contents causing a wide range of disorders affecting the immune system, the autonomic system, respitory and endochrine. WOW!

My interpretation is: The gut is where all our nutrients etc are absorbed. Due to stress, allergies, internal upsets the gut can misfunction. The gut can become leaky (like IC bladders are supposed to be). This malfunction can result in allergic/immune responses and can be the major cause of lots of non specific diseases/conditions such as fibro, joint pain, IBS, acne, fatigue.

The connection is that bladder, gut, nose passages etc when they have abnormal responses within them they can produce disease i.e. IBS, IC and asthma as examples.

The 'belief' is that by correcting a leaky gut (if you can) some of your symptoms may disappear.

Most naturopathic books have a section on Leaky Gut and it really intrigues me.

If anyone finds out anything or has any success in this way keep us posted!!

                  Luv Vonxx

I am convinced after 32 years with IC that there is a large autoimmune component. It makes sense that leaky gut could play a role. I've started taking fish oil and L-glutamine.

I've done a TON of research on Leaky Gut and how it relates to my own IC. I'm sure you would find this interesting. The exciting thing about the Leaky Gut and current research is that it has recently been 'proven' in traditional Medicine by Dr. Alessio Fassano. How exciting! I'm writing a whole big post in this forum about the leaky gut...you can find it by going to Forum --> Patient stories-->Introduce yourself and share your story --> "On the road to remission through grain free eating" (My post). I'll try and post a link if the IC network allows it (I think links need to be approved by a moderator)

Diet: Free of Grains, gluten, soy, dairy, eggs, some nightshades, and I avoid foods on IC list when possible, although IC-list foods don't bother me as much as these other things do. 3. What do I eat? At first the garbanzo bean pattie was my staple (http://tinyurl.com/bddoas4, look for my post). Now I'm on the Auto Immune Profile diet/AIP (Google 'Paleo mom AIP' for more info). 4. IC THESIS: IC is for me and many of us, a systemic issue. I'm looking into Hormone probs, Food intolerances, Leaky Gut, Candida, and oxalate issues. 5. Thanks. 22 day fast has helped Ic, gut still a problem

I've had IC for 32 + years. One of these days I'm going to write all the things I've tried, though I can't remember. My 22 day fast has done amazing things. Eating fruit now without upswing in pain. Very little pain in fact. Gut still a mess, partly from IC, part from all the good foods I've had to avoid, and partly from all the meds.

I'm interested in the leaky gut connection to IC. I'm also looking into the possibility of Candida. I think it's worth giving it a try. We can do anything for three weeks right? I'll be removing fruit & sugar out of my diet and see if some of the flare ups calm down and if the skin dryness clears up.

Thanks for all the info. I'll be checking back.
