Burning mouth syndrome?

Does anybody have this? Do you know if a throat culture that says there is no fungus growth (they let it grow for 4 or 5 days) that came out negative can still mean thrush? I have been on soooo many antibiotics in the past months bouncing between UTI's and throat infections. My mouth seemed to have started this since all these chronic throat infections. I see a bunch of white on my tongue towards the back and some flesh colored larger looking bumps in the very back of my tongue. Also, I see the ENT Monday but the anxiety of this is consuming me. I recently had laryngitis for a week too. I'm still on 2nd antibiotic for the throat and don't even know if it was bacterial in the first place so if I have thrush I'm just feeding it! Anyways, I'm stressing this because I am having surgery soon unrelated and know that intubation tube will be used. I'm not sure why my mouth is on fire all the time and am worried it's going to be worse from the tube or spread it further down if it's still possible I have thrush with negative culture. Also I want to mention the ENT awhile back mentioned my tonsils could be rotted on the inside and tonsillectomy would be the only way of finding out if my tonsils are harboring bacteria so they can send them to the lab. I do have a lot of crypts in my tonsils and see spots hiding in places one minute, gone the next. HELP! Any info?

I honestly don't know what you might have going on in your mouth. Is there any possibility it could be an allergic reaction to something like a mouthwash or toothpaste? I'm just guessing at possibilities. I hope you find an answer.

I have had burning tongue/mouth for about five years. I have asked all of my doctors about it (even if it's not their specialty)--two ENTs, two primary care, two neurologists, gynecologist, and urologist. They have no answers except to comment that it is common in post menopausal women and that it can stop as quickly as it started. They say the elavil I'm taking for IC should help but it doesn't. As a matter of fact, I upped my elavil to 75 mgs at night about three weeks ago and my tongue is buring more now.

I had similiar symptoms several months after being dianosed w/ IC. I went to my ENT because my primary didn't know what it was. It turned out to be throat reflux, of "laryngo-pharengeal reflux". It was a nightmare to have the burning mouth/tongue, tongue redness, throat inflammation. I was so scared at the time because I was thinking, "what now"? ENT's treat this. My ENT knew what it was right away. My treatment was pepcid in the am, nexium 30 min. before dinner, bed elavation, no eating before bed, & gargling with baking soda in water several times a day to cut down the acid in my throat. I remember it took several weeks to feel better & my dr. warned me of that. I remember how upsetting it was on top of everything else. Best of luck & please keep me posted?

My mouth and gums burn but they are not sore or red. The doctor I go to for the PFD said that it may go away if the nerve burning goes away in the pelvis. He was hoping that neurontin would take it away if I increased the dose. I am on 1800mgs now and have not seen any improvement. I did try diflucan for possible fungus and take omeprozole for stomach acid and stay on the IC diet. P;ease if anyone knows what this is help.

I had replied to this old thread above your new one. I still get this from time to time. Right now it is flaring again, with just my tongue burning. As I said, my ENT thought it was from "throat reflux". I don't know if you have GERD. But you might want to call an ENT & ask them if they treat this. I know how frustrating & annoying this is, feel better soon!

Not burning mouth but I have burning scalp, hands, feet, vulva - I am on herbs to downregulate the nerverous system which seem to be working well on the hands and feet and vulva but not the head.
Seems alot of us have some sort of central nervous system thing going on.

Hope you find an answer.

If the burning is all external, it's possible that it could be an allergic reaction. You might want to look at everything that is touching your skin --- if it goes from head to feet, it might be from either laundry soap or the product used in bathing. It took me quite a while to find cleansing agents for my showering --- I didn't have burning, however --- it was uncontrollable itching.

Dear Anniepie and Sue -

I don't know how close you two are to menopause, but burning mouth syndrome can be something that occurs during perimenopause/menopause. You might want to talk to your gyno about that. It may be as easy as going on estrogen.

Hi, about six years ago my tongue and roof of my mouth started to burn and I would get these rount spots on my tongue, I went to the ent he treated me for thrush for a couple months even though there was not yeast present in the cultures. It didn't help. Shortly after getting the burning in my mouth I got what would later be diagnosted as vulvodynia and the two things, my mouth and vulvo are related somehow. I was in horrible pain for about a year and a half before I was diagnosted with IC and Vulvodynia. I was treated with Elmiron and Heprin and Litocaine instilation. . For a while there they put me on gabapantin which helped a little. I still have the problem but find relief with the Elmiron and Instillations and following the IC diet. So far the Instillations and elmiron is the only thing that helps. I'm reading a book called " The Better Bladder book" an the author says that diets high in Oxalatic acid also contribute to Vulvodynia and mouth pain so you might try changing your diet. I hope this helps a little. For a long time I felt crazy because the burning in my mouth was just so horrible and the doctors could find a the definite cause. good luck I hope you feel better soon.

I used to suffer from GERD quite a bit but following the IC diet closely seemed to fix this.

Lately though I have been flaring from having an anaphlaxtic reaction to something, I am back to having sores in my mouth, burning of the skin in my mouth and sore throat, now more like sores in my throat.

I tried diflucan, probiotics, and nystatin. I saw my Dr. yesterday and he felt it is a virus, so I am now trying antivirus meds. I have only taken 3 does and have not noticed any improvement yet.

Sores in mouth come and go, throat seems to be more steady, and more painful.

I am very sensative to meds so I am sure this med kept me a wake last night, I only have to take it for 5 days, so I will just put up with this.

I forgot what a pain in the butt this is.
