  • Swimming?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any tips for swimming with the vulvodynia? I have an opportunity to go swimming in a couple weeks and I haven't tried it yet since having this. I want to try but I'm afraid the chemicals will burn. I read that vaseline can be used as a barrier for it. I was thinking maybe numb it with my 5% buffered lido cream and sealing it in with the vaseline? I just really want to try swimming because how else will I know? My son is 1 1/2 and I am afraid I will never get to experience swimming with him as he grows up! Has anyone had problems wiyth swimming or actually done pretty well with it? ~Ann

Thanks so much for your reply. I have a question. I know there are different kinds of Vulvodynia. I have the kind where its burning/itching in the whole vulva area to the rectum. I'm just wondering if you have the localized pain or like mine? I'm so scared to try the swimming because I don't want to cause more irritation. I think I will try it though.

My PT suggested i look into a water arobic class. As she put it, the only way you are going to know if it bothers you is to try. I think sometimes we are just so consumed and worried that we forget, we can try it and see.

She suggested rinsing off in a shower afterwards to get rid of the chlorine.

I also have wondered if maybe wearing swim shorts on top of the bathing suit might help protect the area more too.

I understand that some of the women on the board have used Desitin to help their vulvodynia. That would be great for swimming, since it would create a water-proof barrier. I imagine vaseline would work well, also.

Hey annie, I forgot to ask are you talking about swimming in a public pool or do you have a pool? Because if its your pool you can get non-clorine chimicals and it does not bother IC or Vulvodynia..

Unfortunately it's a public pool. We will be in a hotel in a couple weeks and I really want to try to take the baby in there. I wish we had a pool!

Oh ok.. Well I would try the vasiline then and wash really good afterwards.. Another little advice you might want to bring a gallon of spring water with no additives to rinse off with after you get bak to your room, because motels have alot of clorine in the water.. So even if you were to wash off with there water in the shower you still might get irritated from the water.. It was just a thought
