Before menopause I would have severe vaginal itching around my period. Menopause was a blessing for me.

I really wish I could offer better suggestions for the pain you get when your period starts. I have pain no matter what (worse on my period) and I don't know what to do about it either =( I think hydroxyzine helpsa bit with painful itch, but the relief is very shortlived.

I got to PT for my vulvodynia and IC and PFD. I will be just fine down there when it is not time to be on my period but I can always tell when it is time. I have to wear a panty liner daily anyways so I dont think it is that irritating down there. I have taken so many meds for my vulvodynia. Right now its the time for my to have my period but I dont actually bleed because I have an IUD. I'm having a HORRIBLE flareI'm so raw and it hurts so bad. I have used creams, changed laundry detergent, use cold packs, lidocain cream, meds like elavil, atarax, neurotin.. & they dont help.

I take Lyrica and use a steroid cream. I started Lyrica a week ago and it doesn't seem to have much of an effect yet. The steroid cream helps for about 30 minutes and then it loses it effect. I was also doing PT, but am now on a break from it because it would flare up my symptoms too much. We are hopefully that Lyrica will calm my nerves down a bit before we start PT again.
Many people with vulvodynia also have tight muscles. Have you gotten that evaluated?
Ginaaa, I have symptoms daily, but they seem to get worse while on my period. I think I am more sensitive on my period and the pad touching everything is just excruciating! I have switched to using Seventh Generation pads, which my PT told me has been helpful to many of her patients. However, it seems to make no difference to me. I am thinking of trying GladRags next. Perhaps the type of feminine care product you are using increases your irritation?

does anyone vulvodynia act up when its time to have your period? I will be symptom free other than pain, until it is time for my period to start (I don't have one because I have an IUD) but at that time it gets itchy and inflammed and hurts. Is there any way to stop this? Is this common?

I take Effexor XR right now both for my Vulvodynia and mild depression. It works okay for the Vulvodynia I have good days and bad days. I have taken both Elavil and Cymbalta in the past. Elavil seemed to help the best, but I could not take the fact that I was becoming a whale from it.
I take vaginal valium at night for my pelvic floor and that has been benefiting me.

I've been seeing specialists in the vulvar clinic at U of M and the meds they gave me were
neurontin, hydroxine, elavil. all of these also treat IC. I have found no relief/help from them and my VV is horrible right now!
Best of luck to you. My VV is worse than my IC!
