  • Medication for depression

I was wondering what medications are safe to take for depression while you are on other medications for the bladder.
    I am on
Elavil 40mg a day for bladder
Librax 3 times a day for IBS
    Nexium 40mg twice a day

Before I was on elavil I was on prozac for many, many years. They took me off that to start the elavil. I didn't think I needed the prozac any more so I was not concerned.
Now I have been having a hard time to deal with the stresses in my life. I asked my PCP if there was something I could have to help with this and she said No not with what I am on.
    Is this true?
Please let me know if anyone is on the same meds and is taking something to help with the stresses of life.
    thank you
IC/IBS Hopeful : I had my bladder removed on September 29, 2008 for me but I am also so happy I have no regrets

I take Elavil for my IC and my vulvodynia, and I take Wellbutrin for depression. I don't know about your other meds - did your doctor indicate which meds could be a problem?

HI I'm on Elavil and Elmiron and my dr. put me on Cymbalta for depression and pain. It seemed to work really well......I had to stop taking it because of my Barrett's Esophagus. Hope you find something that works for you. Depression is the pits! Roxie

(which causes me to have constant yeast infections!)I take Cymbalta for Neuopathy/Myopathy pain. I use the Climara patch for menopause symptoms. I'm on a very strict diet because of the IC, IBS and Gastric Bypass. I take Primal Defense Probiotics and whole food Iron.
I no longer have the awful urethral pain! I've been using MSM gel now for 4 mo. and haven't had a flare up or the urethra pain.....it's amazing stuff!!:woohoo:

I take Lexapro while on Elavil - it's been a huge help to me.
        Kim

        Diagnosed August 2001

Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Effexor (for depression & anxiety)

Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA, Lexapro (for depression & anxiety, but also helped my IC) (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)

I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for about 8 years now.

I asked this question to my PCP who does not manage my IC or my IBS. She is the one who said I can't take anything with the meds I am on. At the time I was only on Elavil and Nexium. She indicated it was the elavil she said with the 40mg a day I can't go on anything.

My Urogyno at one point when he increased my elavil to 40mg from 30mg asked if I needed more and I said no. I wanted to do this all on my own. I do not want to admit I am depressed again.

I have been having pain in my left side of my large Intestines and finally got an appt with my GI doctor after suffering for a month and a half. He put me on Librax 3 times a day, and also asked me about my stress level. I laughed and said the last 2 years has been hell. I listed a few things ( sister died in my arms from a blood clot she had nothing wrong with her and boom dead in 10 minutes as we were getting ready for bed) we are fighting to keep our property and house (our taxes went from $4500 to 0ver 14,000 a year), my son is a type 1 diabetic, and I have IC, IBS, and GERD. this just names a few things. "NO", NO STRESS AT ALL.

I told him I am so use to taking 1 day at a time and that I don't think this pain is stress. I should be happy the botox is working great right now. This is the reason I think I may need somthing I was supposed to find out about my appeal yesterday and no answers yet I even called twice. If they denie me I don't know what I will do I need the botox. I can not go back to living in the bathroom. If they denie me I will need something to help me through this.

PS. the librax works for about a half hour after I take the pill but doesn't really make much of a difference. It has been a week on the med and I am supposed to call next week to let him know if it worked or not. If it doesn't work I have to have a abdominal CT.
Thank you for the responses I see my uro/gyno on the 30th and have a running list of questions to ask him. depending the results of my appeal.
Thank you all it is so nice to talk with people who know what I am going through.
