  • Lost my Job today.........

I have been out of work for the last month and a half and I haven't been able to work even half shifts, it has been bad, so I took a FMLA and that helped during the trial and interstim implant, then I got sick in April and havnt' been back since April 4th. Today they called me and fired me for missing all this time, I did file for a medical leave of absence, and was granted one and i have checked in once a week to keep the abreast of how I was feeling and then today at 2:00 my boss called to see how my Doctor's appointment went yesterday I filled her in and she asked me if I was going to be able to work at all this summer and I told I asn't sure and she told me they were going to have to let me go. They needed to have people that could be there, and they need to let me go............so I am no longer employed and I am pretty depressed this evening..............I understand why? but on the phone.........that is just wrong.........
    Thanks for listening.

    Kirsten,
I am sorry to hear that you lost your job. I thought that the point of FMLA was that you could have up to 12 weeks off of unpaid year in a 12 month period and they COULDN'T fire you? Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I remembered it, in fact I am about to apply for it at my job once my 1 year comes up.
I just looked it up and found this
Q: Will I lose my job if I take FMLA leave?

Generally, no. It is unlawful for any employer to interfere with or restrain or deny the exercise of any right provided under this law. Employers cannot use the taking of FMLA leave as a negative factor in employment actions, such as hiring, promotions or disciplinary actions; nor can FMLA leave be counted under "no fault" attendance policies. Under limited circumstances, an employer may deny reinstatement to work - but not the use of FMLA leave - to certain highly-paid, salaried ("key") employees.

I have been diagnoised for 6 1/2 years now. I have taken a long break from the ICN but really miss helping out my fellow IC patients and want to get back into posting.
1st hydro 4/07 showed no visible signs of IC but tons of mast cells in all my biopsy samples which did prove IC.
2nd hydro 4/13/09 showed dark purple glomerulations and I had a capacity of 450 cc's. This hydro proved that my IC had progressed.
I have tried every oral medication as well as rescue instills and DMSO.

I have been lucky enough to see Dr Hanno, the top IC specialist in PA who has told me due to the fact that I have not responded to any "standard" treatments that I have a severe, end stage case of IC with a horrible quality of life (didn't have to tell me that last part!)

I would get ahold of the labor board. Something is wrong with this picture. I don't think that they can fire you if you are on leave. Firing you on the phone is pretty lame if you ask me.
          Meds I take:
          Elmiron, Elavil, Vagifem- for IC
Albuterol, Flovent, Atrovent- for Asthma and lung problems
Paxil, Clonazepam- for depression and Anxiety
          Atenolol- for rapid heart rate
          Nexium- for Gerd
          Levothyroxin- for Hypothyroidism
          Lasix, Pottasium- for edema
          Lipitor- for High Cholesterol
          I coated aspirin
          02 at bedtime

I am so sorry that this happened to you and the disrespectful way that they went about it, (doing it over the phone.) Though I am betting that they probobly did it that way b/c they were too ashamed to look at you while they did it. You deserve to be treated so much better than that.

I wish I could take away the pain for you. I know it hurts. I have been fired before too and I was so humilated and embarrassed. But, I got my vindication a few years later when a friend of mine became the new GM and hired me for my bosses old job at the place where I was fired. The first job I got to do when I returned there was to fire the woman that fired me. That was a glorious experiance. (She had fired me to give the job to her daughter in law.)

I am sorry that you have had this experiance. But, I truly believe with all my heart that everything happens for a reason. When I was fired, I ended up getting a much better job right away, and ultimately going back and getting another better job. In your case, I feel certain that God has plans for you too. I dont know yet what that plan is, but I do believe there is one. The plan may be a better job for you with more money, or it could be one that has a less stressful work enviornment, or one with flexible hours. Or the plan may be that since you have been sick for so long, it could be because you need to be home and able to rest to get better and need Disability. Like I said, I dont know what's in store for you, but I do believe whatever it is, it will be better for you.

I have never known anyone who did not leave one job and end up better off, (whether it was because they quit or were fired), they still all ended up better off. I think the reason for this is b/c whatever the reason you end up leaving, you still think about the things you liked there and didnt and the things that you can live with and cant and ultimately, you seek out things in your next situation that are different from the bad things in the place you left.

If you decide ultimately to apply for Disability, being fired for this will actually end up helping you! Having missed so much work that you lost your job, your Drs. will probobly not have a problem backing you up either.

I agree with the others here that what they did was definately morally wrong and possibly legally too. I agree that you should contact the Dept of Labor, Wage, and Hour Control and ask them about your options. I would also contact an atty to discuss this and get their opinions on things.

Again, I am so sorry that this happened to you! You are in my thoughts and my prayers tonite. I feel so bad for you right now. If you want to talk, vent, cry, or whatever, please feel free to pm me and I will be glad to give you my number. You are not alone. We are all here for you and will be here for you to support you every step of the way.

Sending hugs of comfort, empathy and support,
                Amy

                  Kirsten,
I am so very sorry to hear the news. Mean People Really Do SUck. In fact, I have that sticker on my car window. Not sure if I told you that already. Sorry if I did. Hang in there. Try to take a deep breath and relax. You need to do what is best for you. There are far too many non-sympathetic and non-empathic people in the cooporate/business world to let it get to us. Everyone is always trying to find some rude way of increasing their revenue or whatever have you. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Feel free to contact me any time. Warmest regards, and the biggest bestest huugss too!! Kirsti

Status: Diagnosed October 2006 via cystoscopy with hydrodistention. Max anesthetized bladder capacity only 250 cc's. Mast cells and pinpoint bleeding found.

Remission for me means less pain for more days than not. Frequency is inevitable with a bladder this tiny! That is ok though. The difference between when I was diagnosed and now, is that I have embraced that fact. Me and the loo, we are one.
