  • Birth control pills

I am going to my GYN tomorrow and asking for birth control pills since I have worse symptoms during and after ovulation. My PCP and urologist's nurse (forgot to ask the doctor) seem to think this is a good idea to try. Is there a certain kind that seems to work best for this? Or is it going to be trial and error? Thanks.

I have horrible flares during my period. So my gyno has me take not take the active pills (the ones during period). That way I dont have periods, it's great. It helps out alot. I take low-ogetrel pills, but its kind of trial and error until you find one you like and that doesnt have side effects. Good luck.

      Hello,

I also take birth control for the pain management of my IC and for endom. I take them everyday just like the one post above mentioned. I have no periods only sometimes maybe breakthrough bleeding once a year. I tried for 3 months to come off of them and my bladder just screamed along with pelvic pain. I have been on them 10 years now..my biggest side effect- weight gain!

      Good Luck,

I took birth control pills a few years back because of heavy bleeding, but my GYN took me off of them because of weight gain...he said that in the 10 yrs it would take me to reach menopause I'd be 30 lbs heavier! I opted to put up with heavy periods, but they have settled down somewhat. I take thyroid meds too and that helps with the heavy periods when the doseage is right. Thanks for the input. I hope he will try this. I'm really ready to feel better. I feel so stressed out!

Hi. Usually with birth control, everything is trial and error.
My IC is aggravated from blood. So when i took my first pack of pills, i bled a little every day for a whole month. I'm in the middle of my second pack and i only had a few spots a few days apart and i don't know if it's coincidence but i feel alot better these days.

So just stick with it. Maybe ask for a low dose pill first to see how that works. I take Mircette which is low dose and i have very minimal if any side effects.
          I hope it works for you <img src="graemlins/bunny.gif" border="0" alt="[bunny]" />

My GYN gave me Alesse yesterday. I think this is low dose. I have taken them before, but that was before I was having bladder problems. My worse pain is during ovulation, so I'm hoping this works!

I've been on birth control pills for awhile now and they don't help me with my symptoms at all. They may have made my bladder problems worse.

I've tried numerous birth control pills and they made my IC worse. I also have bad flare ups during ovulation and before my period. The last time I went on the pill I must have been taking them for almost 6 months- the longest I had ever been on the pill. I finally realized they were making my IC worse so I stopped taking them and had a terrible reaction. I was very depressed, my lymph nodes under my arms were really swollen (something me and the doctors never figured out) and started having panic attacks. My hormones were so messed up! About 8 months later or so I got pregnant which is the only time I feel really good. Anyway, It seems like a lot of other people have had good luck on the pill. I don't mean to discourage you, I just wanted to tell you my story. Good luck.

I do appreciate all the replies and information. I started the pills last week, and I hope they help. It's amazing to me how my urgency/frequency is so closely related to my cycle so I just have to give this a try. It seems a little too easy for me, but we'll see.

For what it's worth for you gals on hormones:
With my HRT, I cycle in progesterone for 12 days. Every month since Dec. it's been flare time on that hormone. When I'm just on the estrogen part, my bladder is much better. If your bcp's are mainly progesterone, that may be your problem. Many who post here have said that the progesterone kills their bladder, and I can attest to that. With the recent reports, I'm planning on stopping hormones, but I want to see my gyno 1st., so maybe I can stop gradually.
We can help one another here. Sue

I was on Levlin when my IC symptoms started. I went off the pill for a few years and after a while the IC was bad. Probably because it was finally recognised at IC. Anyways I was put back on Levlin because I found out I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. And it has really helped the PCOS and calmed down my bladder alot. My IC has always been ruled by hormones. When I was on Lupron (stops all hormones, ie menopause), my IC went away for a little while. When my hormones came back, so did the pain.
So, they work well for me.
                        Good Luck!
