• I.C. and Menopause

Hi Everyone,
I am new to the board, and I'm sooo thankful I have found all of you! I have had I.C. for over a year, and what a year it has been! I didn't think it was possible for someone to suffer this bad without having a terminal disease!
I also have IBS. I was dx., with that before I had I.C.
I am on Elmiron and Atarax. I also take an anti-depressant. The elmiron is making my hair fall out, but they say when I go off of it my hair will come back!
Does anyone suffer from menopause? I stay soo swollen in my stomach, arms ankles etc....
I was put on a water pill, but I already pee at least 30 times a day!
Also has anyone flown and been through security since being dx. with I.C.? We are planning a trip in June, but... I stay so nervous from thinking about this, I can't look forward to NOTHING!
Thanks for listening to me, I enjoy this board so much.

I take a diuretic for blood pressure and it doesn't seem to effect my IC --- I do find that I urinate in larger amounts, but not more frequently.

And I have flown many times since my IC diagnosis in 1975. What I do is to go to the bathroom before going through security, then again before getting on the plane. That way I can avoid having to "hold it" for long periods. It's nice to have an aisle seat so you can get to the bathroom easier. I like flying so it's relaxing for me. They always have pillows available on the planes and they are always willing to give me extra ones.

Warm hugs,
Donna
Stay safe

Welcome to the ICN Susan
I had a complete hysto in 1993 and was put on HRT and have had great luck with it! Best thing that ever happened to me was getting rid of those nasty periods I haven't had any problems with HRT but I only have to take estrogen, I don't know if that makes a difference or not.
I also have a problem with water retention but I already pee way too much to take anything for it. I'd rather stay 'puffy' than pee more than I already do.
I have been on many trips since my dx. Alot of people say to get an isle seat so that you don't bother people getting up and down. NOT ME I get a window seat so that I can snooze and zone out as much as possible. I don't care if I make others uncomfortable when I have to get up and down....I'm always uncomfortable!
I usually work myself into a frinzy before a trip. We just got back from Hawaii and it was the trip from he$$. 2 lay overs, 3 plane changes and about 13 hours. I found that the bathrooms were well marked in all of the airports so I didn't have a problem finding one. The added security didn't seem to make that much difference for me.
My biggest fear now with travelling is that there will be a security breach and I will be stuck on a plane for hours not being able to leave my seat or the airport will be evacuated and I will be standing outside for hours. I'm not too sure that they take medical conditions into consideration, someone PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong.
I was on elmiron for almost a year and the only thing it did for me was make my hair fall out and it all did grow back in once I stopped taking the drug.

Again, WELCOME to our family

HRT bothered me. I had to take estrogen (supposed to be ok for ic) & progesterone, bad for ic. The
progesterone really made me hurt, but I haven't had a hysto & won't take estrogen alone.

Teri, as far as your fear about being stuck in your seat because of some airline happening like security, a bumpy flight etc. Here's how I avoid this. I have a med alert bracelet, the main one. It says "Interstitial Cystitis. Needs frequent rest room access." There is an emergency number to call on the back. The med alert people will have all your medical info on file, meds you take or something like IC. They give a wallet card too. This has helped me many times. I say, "I have a bladder disease and I am in a great deal of pain and need to use the rest room. Here is my med alert bracelet. And I show them. I never take it off.

My husband and I were "stuck" in a security situation almost ten years ago (there was a call received that there was a device on our plane) --- When we landed there were armed guards there to escort us from the plane and all the passengers were taken to a holding area, actually one of the gates at the airport. I did have to get permission and be accompanied to the restroom as far as the door, but there was no problem being allowed to go.
