I cannot tolerate ANY topicals. Never tried the Estrace, but couldn't tolerate Premarin.
I don't actually think it is the med part of the cream either. I think that when you have IC or vulvodynia, the nerves are already so irritated, that giving them one more foreign thing sets them off.
If you believe that IC/vulvodynia are histamine/mast cell reactions, this reaction makes sense.

Dx: Idiopathic Dilated Cardiomyopathy/Congestive Heart Failure-1997, Vulvar Vestibulitis-2006, IC-Feb 2007, Atrophic Vaginitis 08, Heavy Long and Painful Periods leading to Partial Hysterectomy-2007, Rectal Fissure-2007, Pelvic Floor Dysfuntion-2008, Post-Menopausal-2010
Meds: Coreg, Elmiron, Elestrin, Est/Test Topical Gel, Valium Suppositories, Lyrica, Dyrenium to counteract edema from Lyrica, Pain Meds.
If you are very estrogen deprived and have atrophic vaginitis then any estrogen cream when applied will burn the nerve endings until they get saturated. Also some people are allergic to proplene glycol which is in most creams as a base, you could try a compounded cream without the glycol.

For IC I use Elmiron, Elavil and Freeze dried Aloe Vera (it works likes Elmiron, but naturally)and Azo as needed. I also take Zegerid, Randitine for Barrett's Esophagus. (which causes me to have constant yeast infections!)I take Cymbalta for Neuopathy/Myopathy pain. I use the Climara patch for menopause symptoms. I'm on a very strict diet because of the IC, IBS and Gastric Bypass. I take Primal Defense Probiotics and whole food Iron.
I no longer have the awful urethral pain! I've been using MSM gel now for 4 mo. and haven't had a flare up or the urethra pain.....it's amazing stuff!!:woohoo:
Some women have had good luck with RePhresh vaginal moisturizer that keeps the PH and adds moisture, but like the MSM it relieves symptoms but does not repair the cells. Women who have had cancers often use the moisturizers for symptom control.

I tried Premarin cream and it caused burning. You can't get Estrace cream in Canada. I had my doctor order me estradiol cream from a pharmacy that does compounding. They mix it up to order for you and can put the estradiol in a less irritating base. Mine is Estradiol 0.01% in Cliniderm. I have a 30 gm tube, but they can make larger quantities. It doesn't bother me when applied externally. It can be used internally. I use Vagifem tablets internally.
Hi, Roxy: I never heard of MSM gel--what it is and where can I get it?
Hugs

PS--I have the vagi-fem tablet but I am afraid to take it --I am in flare now for 8 weeks--
[Hi, Roxy: I forgot to ask you about the Aloe Vera freeze driec--I read some good things about this--have rx for Elmiron but am also afraid to try that--I hate taking meds--I am taking so many now for other health problems--where can you get Aloe Vera ?
