i hear all the time about how menopause and decreased estrogen and taking the pill hellp people stay out of flares or decrease pain, but are there any out there who think the pill hurts more than helps? I'm just wondering b/c I am trying to figure out what caused this flare up and I just started the BC pill after quitting when I started having IC symptoms back in 06, and now I seem to have a flare for about 6 days now, if anyone has any feedback, let me know.

gosh, I don't know what to tell you, I had a hysterectomy in Nov 05, before that I hadn'r used birth control it 15 years.
I am sure there are many that will have an answer for you. I do know of one that no matter what hormone b/c she used flaired her, and she got an IUD.'The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.' -
My IC doctor says that birth control pills bother some IC patients, but help others. He said that he looked for a pattern several years ago, but was unable to find one. (RATS!)Kadi

so, if a birth control pill does bother an IC patient and the BC pill is supposed to trick the body into thinking it is pregnant, does that mean that when Ic PATIENTs who do not tolerate BC have no hope of spontaneous remission while pregnant?? I just wish I knew so I could decide to stop taking the pill or not, why does everything have to be so complicated.Onset of symtoms November 1, 2006

I don't know about menopause yet but I know that I get a HORRIBLE flare when I get my period because I just had my first one in months and it was awful. I take continous birth control for this very reason. I know there are some other women who do this too.Christine
I have been diagnoised for 6 1/2 years now. I have taken a long break from the ICN but really miss helping out my fellow IC patients and want to get back into posting.
1st hydro 4/07 showed no visible signs of IC but tons of mast cells in all my biopsy samples which did prove IC.
2nd hydro 4/13/09 showed dark purple glomerulations and I had a capacity of 450 cc's. This hydro proved that my IC had progressed.
I have tried every oral medication as well as rescue instills and DMSO.
I have been lucky enough to see Dr Hanno, the top IC specialist in PA who has told me due to the fact that I have not responded to any "standard" treatments that I have a severe, end stage case of IC with a horrible quality of life (didn't have to tell me that last part!)

BC pills are a smorgasboard of doses, and types of estrogens and progestins. If one isnt working for you and causing a flare, ask the MD for another type. In general for IC a higher estrogen is better than a higher progestin. Ovcon 35 is a common BC pill that a lot of IC'ers can take.
If you are interested in birth control, ask about the Mirena IUD. I had one and loved it, it will stop periods after a time and is a BC device also.
