  • Uterine Fibroids and considering hysterectomy

So, my husband and I adopted a beautiful little girl from Russia who is half Chinese, believe it or not and we have infertility. My IC doctor has said over and over again that having a hysterectomy would improve my pain because the fibroids sit on my bladder, thereby increasing my pain. I would like to hear from others who have had it and what your response to it was. Did it help your IC at all? I just don't want to go through something drastic without ensuring it will help.

    Thank You!
Diagnosed in 2007, but had IC symptoms since 2002. My current regimen includes: home instillations of Marcaine, Heparin and Solu-Medrol plus vaginal valium suppositories nightly. I also use Tramadol for pain as needed.

I have fibroids too. I don't think on my bladder though. They are really tiny and I was thinking of getting them removed. They don't cause me any pain though. Do you get extremely painful during your periods? Have you periods become more irregular with having IC and the fibroids? You are around same age as me too.
In memory of my beloved best friend in the whole world! Timmy (West Highland White Terrier)

I had fibroid tumors on my uteris lining and had a vaginal hysterectomy 23 years ago. To me this was one of my easy surgery's.

        fibroids

        Hi,
As Linda May said, I also had fibroids removed many years ago and found it to be a relatively easy surgery.
I can't speak to the effect of the fibroids or the surgery on IC since was before I had it.

          fibroids

Oops, need to correct the above,(sorry, no sleep for a while). I had a vaginal hysterectomy because of fibroids and as I said, it was not a difficult procedure as surgeries go.

I had a partial vaginal hysterectomy in 06, due to many large fibroids, and heavy painful periods. While it didn't really help the ic any, it temporarily ended pelvic pain. But now six years later pelvic pain is back full force, feel like i have pelvic inflammatory disease, but i don't hear much about women having pid after having a partial hysterectomy. When they removed my uterus they found that i had adenmyosis(its like endometirosis, but confined only to the uterus. So it was a positive thing for me to have the partial hysterectomy.
Dx 2005. Worsened w/preg in 94. Voiding 100 x. DMSO in 04= 7 weeks, worsened. Saw urogyno 05. Started heparin, kenalog lidocaine, helped a few hours. Referred to uro who implanted stim in 06. Trial great, w/99% improvement. Not seen same w/perm implant, leads were placed in rt. labia which caused me pain to set on therapeutic level. Leads were placed in butt w/trial stim, & not painful to turn up. Having revised 11-19, done while awake, so can ask where I feel pulses, so can be placed in butt rather than labia. W/revision, should be able to turn high & see therapeutic effect. Still need to see gyno for PFD, have terrible pain w/orgasm. On Valium supps. Helps some. IC & PFD make sex painful, hopefully stim & gyno will help.

I did have the total hysterectomy (leaving my ovaries only) and haven't regretted it for a DAY! The recovery was tough, but well worth it. I still have IC flares and do hydrodistentions every 3-4 months, but I do NOT have the horrible ones that were ALWAYS with my periods and guaranteed to put me in bed every month! I could not take birth control to not have so many periods because I had a blood clot when I was 22. I figure we made it through one international adoption and if we ever wanted another child, we'd just adopt again. No, it's not an easy road either....but anything worth having is well worth fighting for. Risk versus benefit: The benefits highly outweighed the risks in mine and my previous URO's mind. I had mine back in May 2011.

Glad I found this post. I've been told I have a fibroid near my bladder also. A gyn found it about 6 months ago. He says its near my bladder and he suggests hysterectomy. But I'm not so sure. I have been examined by a ton of docs and no one has ever mentioned it. And I've had symptoms of IC for 13 yrs now. Even before I had kids! So i cant be certain a hysterectomy would do any good. I wosh i knew what to do:-( Glad it worked out well for you!
                  symptoms when in a flare:

I feel everything in my urethra but I know its really my bladder. Pressure, stinging, urgency, tingling feeling thats hard to describe.
*I have a fibroid on my uterus near my bladder.

                  Medication
100mg Amitripyline ( I have seriously gained almost 50lbs on this drug but I feel it works)
                  Flexoril 10mg (doesn't work)
                  Hydrocodone 5/325 PRN
Cetalopram 40mg *severe anxiety over flare

Physical therapy hasnt really helped but I love her! I've learned so much! She states that my muscles around
                  My urethra are very tight.

currently seeing a Gyn in my town and a Uro in Seattle (4 hrs away)

I have had lots of long term remissions. Currently been struggling with good & bad days since Jan 2012

Hi bjov, I a guess its just a toss of the coin really. as i had a partial hysterectomy(still have tubes and ovaries) in Feb 06. I while i saw a change for the better with my bladder for a short while, it didn't last long. However I did not have the partial for the relief of my bladder though, I had for relief of my uterus and unbearable periods, and large fibroids, and some call andemyosis(SP?)(similar to endometriosis, but but only contained to the uterus, (thank God!!). I am very happy I have the partial, as I longer have painful heavy periods, or the pain very the large fibroids. I would do it again in a heart beat. But I would not recommend to a person who's sole purpose to do is to relieve the bladder, as in my humble opinion, a partial or total may not relieve the bladder issues, like I said it's a toss of coin if it will help with bladder symptoms are not, in my case, it was very short lived, for the bladder relief, so I am really glad that did not have it done for that purpose alone. Not to say that if the large fibroids are bothering you a lot, them maybe a partial is in order, and you would prob at least relieve so relief from that itself. But be wary if you are doing for the sole purpose of having it done for the relief of bladder pain alone. Sorry just my two cents worth.

That's what I was thinking too. Since I've had IC for so many years and even before I had my kids, I'm thinking the fibroid isn't the problem. I don't have bleeding because of the IUD I have. And the only time it hurt was when I had the Ultra sound to confirm the fibroid. Wonder if there's a natural way to shrink a fibroid?
