  • Baking Soda Shooters and Tums

I've been in about a 2.5 week flare and finally decided to contact my uro. She said to try the baking soda and tums thing. So, I did a shooter and tums at 10am and another at 6pm and am feeling quite a bit better. What I'm wondering is how long should I do this for? A few days? A week? Dumb me, I forgot to ask.

Ok I am a newbie...what is the baking soda and tums thing? Just wondering maybe it will be a good trick to have in my back pocket. I hope someone on here has an idea of how long to do this for...Good luck and lots of healthy hugs!

Because its high in sodium its best to only use baking soda as a last resort. This is especially true if you have HBP or are on a sodium restricted diet.

Some patients find that if they're having a bad flare, they can calm it down by drinking a half teaspoon of baking soda in an 8oz glass of water. This is sometimes followed several hours later with 2 plain white TUMS antacids. This should only be used if you do not have problems with high sodium or blood pressure.

I can't use the baking soda due to high blood pressure, but Tums are okay for me. I am allowed to take four at a time --- I'm actually supposed to take them daily for calcium.

            Ladies,

Thanks for all of your input. I am feeling MUCH better today. I did three doses yesterday and one this morning. I can't believe that something so simple can make such a big difference. I wish I would have known this for all the times in the past. I was told to use only 1/4 tsp in 8oz water. I did 4 tums at a time. So, I will see if the relief continues. Otherwise, I guess I'll pop some more tums and baking soda water.

This worked like a charm for me when I needed it. Wish I had tried it in the beginning when I was first diagnosed. I could have saved myself a lot of grief.

Thanks for the info Kadi! Took me about an hour searching the forum for this recipe.

I have used 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 8 ounces of water up to 3 times a day during a flare. This little trick is also part of the literature I got from Elmiron when first diagnosed. I do not have high blood pressure and this is my go to if foods bother me. It works.
