  • Trying to quit again!!!!

    Hi Ladies
When I first was diagnosed wth IC a month later I quit smoking. I quit for 3 months. Then I would have that occasional one. Well now I smoke 3-5 a day. After having a bad day today I realize this is it.I only had 1 today. My hubby smokes I asked him to quit with me, Yeah Right. But I told him he cant smoke around me for now. I want all ashtrays out of my sight when I wake up. He always is up before me. I always look at this post, but I thought I could quit again.I need support. Tomorrow I am going for zero. Wish me luck. I will report in tomorrow. thanks Everyone-JoJO

It's especially difficult to quit when there is someone else in the house smoking. That old nicotine addiction is so strong that even second-hand smoke makes it difficult to get it out of our systems.

A couple down the road from us used to both smoke. She quit, but he hasn't been able to yet. But --- bless his heart --- he goes outside to smoke because he wants to help her! In my own case, the day I quit cigarettes, my sweet hubby put away his pipe.

If you quit for three months and are down to one cigarette a day, you will make it.

    Sending encouraging hugs,
    Donna

        Hi Everyone
Well I slipped today, I was out shopping trying to find mom a birthday present and I had to keep going potty in every store! On the way home I was crying, cuz of that, and I couldnt find mom anything. So at 6:30pm I had 1. I am hoping I can go rest of the night without anymore. I feel weak! Why can't I do this! Tomorrow is another day I guess. Thanks for listening!! I'm also due for my period like tomorrow maybe that is why I am feeling the extra stress -JOJO

That's the way addictions work. The more upset you get the more your body craves the addictive substance.

Next time you are in a stressful situation, ask yourself: Will a cigarette change the situation? Will it make you less stressed? What is it doing to your body? Will you be sorry you gave in?

Sometimes it helps if you just tell yourself that if you still want the cigarette in two hours, you will have it --- then spend the two hours asking yourself if you really want it.

Do you carry cigarettes with you? If so, one good way to stay away from them is to make them less accessible. It can help if you have to go to the store to get a cigarette. Or at least put them in a corner of the basement or on a high shelf so you have to go get a stool to reach them.

            Sending encouraging hugs,
            Donna

I agree with Donna, especially asking yourself if having a cigarette will change the current sitaution. I quit a few years ago, but a few weeks ago I found out some bad news and had the strongest desire for a cigarette. Before I hopped into the car to drive to the nearest store, I took the dog for a walk and did some deep breathing (just like I would have on a cigarette) along the way. It didn't make the bad news go away, but I also got past the urge to light up.

Kicking an addiction can be extremely difficult, but not impossible. Don't get down on yourself if you slipped, just move on toward your goal of quitting. And think about what you can do with all that money you'll save when you're not buying cigarettes!

Good luck, you can do it!

Hang in there!!!! I'm on day three! Been 5 years since I last tried to quit. Been smoking over 20 yrs. This time I'm trying Nicatrol Inhaler. It is the first time I have gotten this far without cheating, it gives me something to do with my hands and gives me habit of smoking feel. Plus with the low dose of nicotine in it, it certainly takes the edge off. I find I have it in my mouth alot of the time even when I'm not puffing on it.
I have been getting some strange looks from people that see it in my mouth. Today my 17 yr old son told me why!!! He says it looks like I'm chewing on a tampon  gross!!!!
After checking it out in the mirror I found he is correct!! I think I'll get a Sharpie and color it to look like a lit cigar.....although I'll probabley get just as many looks with that. Hey...Ask me if I care, It's working!!!
It's us against the nicotine girls!!!! and we can do it!!! not for anyone else but for us!!!

                Love and Support

I can't remember exactly how many years since I quit, but it was on August 17th and it's somewhere around 16 or 17 years now.

I told myself if I could make it through four days I could do it. I was a heavy smoker, like two packs a day, so it wasn't easy.

Now I don't even miss them.
