It has become incredibly obvious that cigarettes are doing me incredible harm. I am probably allergic to them in addition to all the long term garbage like cancer and emphysema. It has gotten to the point where when I smoke, it triggers intense nausea and once or twice even actual vomiting. I'm already nauseated a lot lately but this is nuts....I crave the cig and then it hurts me and I'm still craving it. AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH! I sure wish I'd never started again (I quit for about a year) but I never lost the psychological craving- now I've got both kinds of cravings! Anyone else out there trying to quit?????

I smoked for many years and was a two-pack-a-day-three-if-I-was-stressed smoker! I'm not sure what motivated me to quit, but I absolutely could not have done it without nicotine gum --- when it first came out and still required a prescription. I was so horribly addicted that it took me six months to wean myself from the gum. I absolutely know what you are going through. I have now been cigarette free for 18 years (as of August 17) and haven't had any desire to smoke for most of that time.
One thing that's important is to stay away from where others are smoking until you feel comfortable without smoking.
Good luck!
Encouraging hugs,

Hi there,
I also feel terribly guilty for smoking,
I know I am close to the point where I will
quit. I am just in this cycle IC makes me
anxious since my symptoms are still not
completely under control and what do I want
when I am anxious....a ciggarette.
The gum didn't work for me. I tried the patch
for a while but I weaned off too soon I think
so it's time to give it another go.
good luck to you....AnaComment

Chew the gum VERY slowly .... I remember that at first I really chomped into it, but I learned quickly.

Lady J,
How are you doing with the gum? I remember when I used it that you chew just a few times then "tuck" it between your gums and cheek. And...it does burn!
Been following all you have to say on the PFD and Romance {blush} boards. You are one strong lady and will quit when you are ready to quit.
Ana,
It took me many many times and many many methods, but finally I did it on 7-20-2000. Did it for vanity reasons first...
wrinkles around mouth and eyes don't need to get deeper, and skin is already too sallow, etc. from all of this pain (that's really awful, isn't it? But at least I'm on the right track by quitting for me and not for someone else);
for love second....
my hubby's been smoking for at least 35 years and coughs every morning...I figure if I quit maybe he can too.....We need to have each other as healthy as possible for as long as possible.(Just in case we can get back to a regular sexxy routine again...he,he!)
It's very hard living with a smoker and he's careful not to smoke too much around me, but I can't bear to make him go outside to smoke. He does work so hard....and does bring in most of the money now...(boy..thaat sounds awful, doesn't it)
Anyway, the long and the short of it is summed up by a friend of mine..."I quit every day, many times a day....the cravings never seem to go away....but they do get further apart."
So, I take it one craving at a time Ana and Lady J...
Sending positive thoughts your way. I'm here to support you and any others as soon as you're ready...
Susan

Susan,
Thank you so much for your words of encouragement. They mean a lot to me
My soon to be fiance....can you believe it!
Someone wants to marry me despite all the
hard times. Well he is a nonsmoker and
we will be living together and hopefully
married in the fall. I am trying to taper
and then quit before I move in with him.
I think that will be the best present that
I can give him. and me! Thank you it's so
wonderful to know that there are people out
there who understand! AnaComment
