  • scared mom needs answers. HELP...

    hi Hello everyone,
Most of you know that my son was in the hosp with nasty kidney stones for three days after reading some post i'm getting scared my son is 11 years old he is in the 5th grade at school.
My Question are is it true that most of the time if you get kidney stones they return?
is there anything we can do to stop them from returning? i don't want to see my baby goe threw this again. banghead
and if they do return how offen do they return. I'm scared to dealth does anyone have any good news for me?? can they do anything to help him pass them without so much pain? they did ivp they did a cat scan many type of xrays all type of blood work and guess what nothing showed up a kidney stone until they found one in his urine that he passed they was scraining his urineing. he cried when he had to pee he was running back and forth to the restroom like i do sometimes when my ic flares. he was having bad bladder spasm. so that is what i thought he was saying he said his whole private area hurt. it burned everytime he peed and felt like he was peeing razor. the poor baby just kept running back and forth to the rest room until the last day at the hosp when he started feeling better and that is when he went to the restroom His dad always went with him i didn't want to :o him. but his stream would start off normal for a few second then stop then he would drip a little his bladder I know was not emptying there is no way it was he wasnt peeing long and ya'll know a boy will not lie about that type of pain. any answer will greatly be taking in conceration (sp?) and very well be appreciate.
    Thank you for your help.
I know we sure have not got many answer from all the doctor's he has seen. cussing

Hi Rhonda, wish I could help you out with an answer, I know how hard it must be to see him hurt so much. I have only had a couple of kidney stones, and I know it was rough for me, so being a boy, it must be very painful. I do not know if they can come back, I hope not for his sake, and mine, I do not want any more. Hope some of the other gals can help you out with this, I know it must be a worry for you. Take care and hugs Iris grouphug
Today and every day you are loved, so don't be anxious about tomorrow, God will take care of you tomorrow; Live one day at a time.

      Rhonda,

I'm so sorry, I wish I could help you. I know you don't want to see your baby in pain. Maybe he'll outgrow the problem? I sure hope so. After all, he is young.

      Good luck hon

      Hugs and love,

        Rhonda,
I had my first stone when I was 17. Had no clue what was wrong with me. My parents rushed me to grouphug the hospital and with xrays saw I had kidney stones. Well after 3 days of pain meds and lots of fluids, (anything I could get my hands on) I passed the two. A couple years later after I graduated cosmetology school I had the same pain. I never passed any so they surgically removed them and put a stint in for a week.
A couple times since then I thought I had them, but luckily I haven't had any. That's been years ago. Most people who have had stones usually get more at some point. Uro's have always told me to lay off dairy and caffeine.
My hubby actually went through this for the first time in '03. The uro there told him when the stones forms and starts to travel down that's when the pain is the worst. Usually you have minimal pain when it gets to the bladder. But of course it comes back when you pass it.
I hope your son doesn't get anymore for a very long time. You might ask his pediatrician or the uro if cranberry juice or lemonade would be better for him than caffeinated drinks. (A uro once told me that there is supposedly something in these two drinks that fight the buildup that causes stones to form).
        Hugs to you guys...
        Tons of support,
        Jaime

Brandon hasn't had any pain now for about three or four days now so i guess he has pass them. THANK GOD!
its just the fear of them coming back has gotten me all worried.
I have to call the doctor back Monday Or Tuesday they are going to do another cat scan to make sure the lympnoes sp? has went down in his stomach that is the real reason they put him in the hosp plus trying to find out why he was having this pain since all the test that had came back was neg. for kidney stone UNTIL HE PASSED ONE. gggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrr banghead cussing I guess all the test in the whole wouldn't had showed the stones up if they didn't want to be found. I guess I feel like the cloud looking thing on his xray was where the stones was hiding that is what one of the doctor said may have happen. i'm just so confused but thanks for the advise ya'll have gaven me I will ask about the cranberry juice or lemon aid right now his doctor said for only him to drink cranberry juice or water until after the test but dang Brandon hates the taste of cranberry juice and i'm trying to force him to drink it. I never thought about lemonaide. which is better the homemade type or the one you buy at the store?

The lemonade has something to do with acidity?? I don't remember. I'd think either one would be fine.
I understand about him not liking the taste of cranberry juice. I never did either.
But ask his uro about the lemonade. It's been so long, but I'd like to remember the ingredient it has that helps the kidneys.

You need to get one of the stones to the lab so they can see what it is thats causeing the stones. Then go from there. Sorry.

You might try some of the cranberry juice that's mixed with raspberries or apple --- it's still mostly cranberry, but my husband really likes it --- and he hates the cranberry stuff.

I'm so glad he's feeling better.

                  Gentle hugs,
                  Donna

Kidney stones are primarily diet-related. You need to re-look at his diet first. I hope he (and you) can get through this.

I was in a urologist office today (the one that misdiagnosed me) and I looked at a brochere about kidney stones. My 81 yr. old step-dad had one two weeks ago. He had to have surgery because it was too big to pass. I would say my step-dad and your son are not the norm for having kidney stones. It said the main age is 30-50 yr. old men. I don't think I've ever heard of an 11 yr. old with kidney stones. They suggested lots of water. Pop and caffein are bad. Good luck. I know how hard it is when your kids are sick. You just want to take the pain for them.
