  • Daughter has IC

I have never been on a Chat site so am unsure how to do so. My daughter, in her 30's, has IC. My heart goes out to her as this continues to diminish her quality of life. She does instillations at home, weekly. She was once a very active, athletic person, walking, riding bike, running and happy. Her IC has taken all of this from her. Every form of exercise irritates her IC making it worse. Her days are full of pain and I worry about her mental health and how to get this condition managed so she can enjoy life without being consumed by the symptoms. She watches her diet but this does not seem to bring any relief. How can we, as family, support her?

She is so very fortunate to have your understanding. There are some things you can do that will help. One is to have a look at the IC diet so when you prepare a meal she will be attending, the food will be IC safe. You'll find the food list at the link in my signature below. Most of all, she needs you to understand that there are things she can't do. If you scroll to the top of this page and click on "Patient Education" you'll find a wealth of information about IC, including treatment options. Having someone in the family who is taking the time and effort to learn about her disease will help more than anything. I'm one who doesn't like people treating me like an invalid so (of course) you won't want to do that, but please do let her know that you are willing to offer help if she needs it and lets you know.

Thanks. I am getting together aiii care package for her. Hopefully, it will brighten her day as I know each day is a struggle. I have downloaded the diet & purchased a book to read.

What a wonderful idea. Have you seen Dr. Robert Moldwin's book, "The Interstitial Cystitis Survival Guide?" It's one I think is good for anyone with IC, especially those new to IC. For diet help, I recommend books by Julie Beyer and Bev Laumann. The books in the ICN Shop have all been reviewed by people with IC.

I think one of the most challenging things is the diet. If your daughter does a lot of cooking, there's a section of the IC Network site that has recipes you could print out for her. If you're doing things like candy, you can include things like white chocolate bars; and there are some IC safe treats available in the ICN Shop.
