  • Semen has citric acid in it

    Hi,
I just found something interesting that may account for the vaginal/bladder burning after sex. My roomate has a book that has weird medical facts in it. Written by a doctor. I think its called "Why Do Men Have Breasts?" but I'm not sure. Anyways the book says that semen contains citric acid! That may be part of the reason we feel bad after sex sometimes. As we all know that is definately a bladder irritant. Hmmm....maybe condoms really are the best bet. (At any rate don't swallow any of this stuff!! LOL)

      Ha! Good post!

I don't know. My husband always uses a condom and I still burn. But it's an interesting theory!

I always noticed irriation that was much worse after sex when we didnt use a condom. For the last few years, we have always used them and although I am still irritated down there afterwards, it is not nearly as bad as it was before I realized that was one of my triggers. Thanks for the post!

I always thought citric acid was an artificial (not natural) preservative, in which case it would not be in something natural like semen. Hmmm...

Citric acid is a natural preservative from citrus fruit.

With regards to citric acid in semen, I suppose that has more to do with biochemistry, and something known as the citric acid cycle that occurs in everything living.

I have to go along with this one at least for me and my husband, my flare is worse if we dont use a condom, and it was a suggestion by my IC specialist that we use one, a non spermicadal one though. So hey if it helps.....

Have you tried the female condoms?

                  Hey Briza!
Before my then boyfriend, and now husband, had his vasectomy we tried all types of condoms. The female variety was more like having a ziplock baggy inside of you, but they didn't seem "as" irritating. I think all of the spermicides have irritating chemicals in them. I also think things like astroglide cause problems. In case I didn't mention it before, we use Albolene, the makeup remover and it's never sticky or tacky, nor does it dry out and rub you the wrong way - if you know what I mean

Lisa, hi I'm Sonja, I wanted to ask you about the makeup removerr you mentioned, you are using it as a lube and it is safe for that? And where do you find it at, Wal-mart or is it a special order sort of thing?
I just heard on the radio about a new female condom that is supposed to be more comfortable than the ones they are saleing now, they said to look for it in the feminine care aisle, cant recall the name, but I am going to look for it this weekend and see if it has spermicides in it (or on it???). I will post to let you know what I find out, unless someone gets there before me! My husband is working out of town anyway and wont be home till Tuesday of next week, so depending on how I am feeling (I've been flareing) I may not try them out for awhile!!
Oh well, such is the life of an ICer huh? In fact this flare is due to my husbands last weekend home , I know I should of prepared better, took the pyridium and a pain pill and muscle relaxant prior, but I didnt, hoping it would be ok , when will I learn, my body has a mind of its own and it doesnt care for what I want to do when I want to do it.
My husband if feeling guilty,he called and could tell by my voice I wasnt feeling good and he blames himself for causing me more pain, I tried to explain that it is worth the trade off sometimes, but he still is feeling bad.
Any suggesions about how to help him with his feelings? I am happy he cares enough to have bad feelings, but it is not his fault, he didnt cause my pain my illness did, and I miss him and need the intimacy at times even if I do hurt like heck afterward.
Any good pointers will be welcome!!!!!!

                      Yes, it's a lube...

                      Hi Sonya,
I buy mine at Savon drugs (Albertsons owns them), and it's in the skin care section in a fat BLUE jar. My GYN is the one who recommended it to me, so I can't imagine it's harmful. I don't think I've had any bad reaction to it, and we've been using it for about 3 years now. My husband likes it a lot better too. I cut and pasted the link to the site, so you can see at the bottom where's it avaible (in the US) and I about LMAO when I say some other uses for it. It didn't mention use for sex, but to enhance cleavage.
                      http://www.albolenecleanser.com/Facts.html

In terms of helping him...Oh boy, it's hard, and I certainly don't have all the answers (geez I wish I did!). I miss the spontaneous intimacy as well. I can tell you I need a LOT of time before he even comes inside of me. We both need to make sure my pelvic floor isn't in serious spasm. It helps if he massages me externally with it (and geez can I type this?) not clitorally - yet. My body seems to relax more when I am aroused, but it takes patience, and a quiet nice environment (seems to hardly ever be the case!). I'd say to telll him you love him, and appreciate how much he cares about your feelings. Also, you can use the Albolene to enhance your umm cleavage, and let him do it that way (what do they call it the "French way"?) - even if you don't feel able to have him inside.

I also keep a squeeze bottle to spray myself with cold water afterwards, and someone else here told me she uses a cold can of soda between her legs. I guess just tell him it's NOT his fault, and you will be okay if you have discomfort later that day or the next.

                      Hope this helps???

                      Lisa

I really liked the lambskin but the lubricant on them was the problem I think.

                          Briza,
I don't remember feeling any pain on the outside. All of my discomfort feels like it's on the inside (and not from the was the inner female condom ring). I suppose for women who have that vulvodynia on the outside vestibule area they'd probably not be able to tolerate it. Hey, four times a month isn't bad! I'm feeling like it's only half that often for me...

ok I had to look into this, and this is what I found:

Make-Up Remover Doubles As Sexual Lubricant
                              Newspaper Columns, Pharmacy Q&A October 07, 2002
                              Q. Some time ago a reader praised a moisturizer that she and her husband had been using for 27 years as a sexual lubricant. I meant to save the column, but by mistake I recycled the newspaper. This product was unscented, came in a jar, costs about $11 and starts with an A. I asked the pharmacist about it but he gave me a blank stare.

When I complain to my doctor about vaginal dryness he says use KY Jelly, but it doesn't help. My husband and I have tried other lubricants without much success so we'd appreciate the name of this product.

                              A. The moisturizer you are referring to is Albolene. It is distributed by Numark Laboratories and contains mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin, ceresin and beta carotene. Any pharmacy should be able to order Albolene or you can shop on the Web by searching for it with www.google.com.

Do not use this moisturizing cleanser with latex (condoms or diaphragms) since the petrolatum and mineral oil can compromise effectiveness.

                              Q. I have diabetes and have developed digestive problems as a result. I frequently feel nauseated. If I manage to eat a little something anyway, I get full very quickly and then get a stomach ache. I've been losing weight and it's hard to keep my blood sugar where it belongs.

My doctor said I have "diabetic gastroparesis." I read on the Internet that Viagra might be helpful for this condition, but that seems strange. Is it possible?

                              A. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine did research in mice and found that Viagra could reverse the mouse equivalent of gastroparesis, in which the stomach fails to empty properly. They are conducting trials in human diabetics to find out if the drug will really help.

The scientists noted that insulin works quite well in mice to alleviate this problem. Ask your doctor if insulin would help control blood sugar and relieve your digestive distress.

                              Q. Are there any drugs for cholesterol that aren't statins? My doctor says, "Not really."

I know statins haven't been around all that long and there had to be something doctors used to try to control high cholesterol. I can't tolerate statins and would welcome an alternative.

                              A. You're right that doctors used to prescribe other medicines for high cholesterol. Statin medications like Zocor, Pravachol and Lipitor are so effective at lowering cholesterol that many doctors stopped using drugs like Questran or Colestid. But these medications, and a newer one that is similar called Welchol, are options for people who can't tolerate statin drugs. Other possibilities include Lopid or Tricor.

We are sending you our Guides to Heart Health and Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs for more information on the pros and cons of statin medicines and other alternatives such as psyllium or niacin for controlling cholesterol. Anyone who would like a copy, please send $3 in check or money order with a long (no. 10) stamped, self-addressed envelope: Graedons' People's Pharmacy, No. CL-75, P. O. Box 52027, Durham, NC 27717-2027.

                              Q. I use an occasional aspirin from a bottle that originally held 100 tablets and is now half full. To my surprise, it has an expiration date of 02/2000. Should I throw it out?

                              A. Take a sniff. If your aspirin bottle smells like vinegar, the tablets have started to break down to acetic acid and should be discarded.
