  • Vegetable oil as a lubricant?!?

I've been seeing a physical therapist to help with some of my pain issues in relation to intercourse. (Dialators, electrode therapy, pelvic floor assessment, kegels, blah, blah blah...). While it has all be very helpful so far and worth it, my therapist asked me if I had problems using KY. I told her that indeed I did, and often times burned and itched after it was used. She told me that many IC patients and vulvodynia patients had this issue, and I could use vegetable oil or olive oil as a lubricant in the future. My husband and I have yet to try this, as I wanted to ask if any of you ladies had tried it and if you had found it helpful, messy, troublesome, etc...

    Any thoughts on this theory?

personally I never tried it, but, I am positive that it will stain your bedding. (we tried baby oil and that was a big no no)
    Have you tried astroglide?

Yeah, I've tried astroglide. It still makes me uncomfortable. The therapist said that since vegetable oil was a natural substance it wouldn't be bad for the vagina like baby oil. I would worry about it staining, though. I guess I could put a towel down!

Um, what about a silicone based lubricant like "WET" or any other brand that is silicone? I know it can be used even as a moisturizer, lol. I know there have been a few on here who've used veg oil and even Crisco, I personally have never tried it. I just worry about it being too heavy and staying inside for too long possibly causing an infection or something, but that's just my thoughts, I have no idea, lol!!!

That's what I was worried about too. I used to get a lot of infections and I don't want that happening again. I'll have to ask her to elaborate some more at my appointment tomorrow.

I think it would be fine in my opinion! Just make sure if you use condoms that you may want to use back up like the pill because oil based lubs break down latex. Keep us posted

Ok, yes, I have used vegetable oil in desperation when I realized KY was an irritant for me. The veggie oil was very messy. I use Femglide...I like it much better than Astroglide. I order it in BIG bottles online.

Thanks for the input, Briza. So the Femglide didn't irritate you? Is it only available online? if so, could you pm me where you order from? Thanks!

I don't find Femglide irritating like KY. I like it better than Astroglide because it's a little thicker and less oily feeling. I discovered it when I found one bottle by chance at at discount store in the clearance section but have never again seen it in a store. It was recommended for hospital use (so the label says) so I thought I'd try it and it turned out to be the best I have ever used. So I did a search for it online and found several places that sell it online and so that's how I've bought it ever since.

My husband and I gave the vegetable oil a try last night, and I have to say that I was impressed! We didn't use much (a little goes a long way) and it was very smooth. Most lubricants almost feel gritty to me when I begin using them (must be the instant irritation), but this was smooth from start to finish. We put a towel down to keep from ruining the linens, and had another one handy for quick clean up after application. I also haven't noticed any strange odors or anything since. I would seriously recommend this option for anyone who gets irriated by lubricants. I still haven't tried the olive oil, though. Also, if you do try it, make sure you use a panty liner for the next day or so, just as a precaution to protect your clothing. We used so little it hasn't been a problem, but better safe than sorry.

My doctor suggested the vege oil to me a few years back and I too was impressed with it's performance! You do have to perpare though with old towels and bedding because of staining but it can be real fun and it is also wonderful for massage. Of course, you will want to bathe afterward but your skin will be very soft and supple!!!

Another real plus to the oil vs. Astroglide.... no stickiness :woohoo:

Thanks for the report!! Very good information to have and you have definitely sparked my curiosity, lol. I think the super light veg oil would be better than olive oil, I would think it's more refined or something... Just my thoughts, and on to take the Wesson to the bedroom!!!! Shoot I'll try anything, at least once!

I also have to admit...he REALLY liked it, too. Something about it felt a lot more natural to him than lubricant. It also didn't dry out quickly. And, you're right, armslee...no stickiness!

Traceann, I'm thinking about dumping all my old lube out and re-filling the bottles with Wesson! That way I don't have to travel with a gallon jug of cooking oil. It might look suspicious.
