  • A weekend in Paris

On very short notice, my husband was sent on a business trip to Paris. We had just one week to prepare! He wanted me to go with him for the fun of it (we made it a long weekend) and also so I could act as his guide and interpreter!

It was the most wonderful, romantic trip we've ever taken. We barely planned anything. I said to him, these are the two or three things that I absolutely want to do, and apart from that, we'll just do what we feel up to (which means, what I feel up to). Using my cane I was able to do much more walking than I thought I would. Everything worked out perfectly. We even went to a Thai restaurant with friends, and they were able to prepare a meal for me there that did not contain anything that would cause me to flare. I did have to skip some of my favorite French foods like ripe camembert cheese, but I had coffee every day and a little chocolate, and I did not flare. I have been very good on the diet before we went, and brought all my meds and some instill supplies just in case.

This trip was a complete surprise to both of us, and we didn't have much time to worry about my health issues. We just went. And it was wonderful. I guess it helps that we have both been in Paris before, so we did not feel a need to rush from monument to monument in the time we had. We did go into the Louvre museum just for a little while, and we took a dinner cruise on the Seine river (something I have always wanted to do, but could never afford before).

Maybe -- Paris is an easy city for me because I speak the language and I know my way around reasonably well. But it took some courage to make the trip, and it worked out better than I could have imagined. AND, my husband's business meeting went so well, that he may end up making several more trips over there!

So, I say, if you are not sure about a trip, take a chance. You can always decide you need a rest each afternoon, or maybe a whole day to rest. Maybe you won't do as much as you would if you were healthy, but it is still more than if you didn't go at all!

The only negative was that I caught a bad cold on the last day or on the way back, maybe. So I feel rotten now, but it's something that could happen to anyone. It's why I haven't posted much recently, and my head hurts so I'm going to have to get off the computer, but I SO wanted to share my success story with all of you!
Je vous souhaite de la joie, de la bonne santée, et tout ce qu'il y a de bon dans la vie.
Wishing you happiness and good health, and all the best out of life.

    Peace, Carolyn

Oh Carolyn, I bet that was so great! I am so envious! Our "vaction" this summer is going to be going about an hour and a half away for the weekend to take Griffin to Seaseme Place, not really a weekend for us. I know that Griffin will love it though.

I'm so happy that you got to go. I hope that your cold gets better fast.
    Christine

I have been diagnoised for 6 1/2 years now. I have taken a long break from the ICN but really miss helping out my fellow IC patients and want to get back into posting.
1st hydro 4/07 showed no visible signs of IC but tons of mast cells in all my biopsy samples which did prove IC.
2nd hydro 4/13/09 showed dark purple glomerulations and I had a capacity of 450 cc's. This hydro proved that my IC had progressed.
I have tried every oral medication as well as rescue instills and DMSO.

I have been lucky enough to see Dr Hanno, the top IC specialist in PA who has told me due to the fact that I have not responded to any "standard" treatments that I have a severe, end stage case of IC with a horrible quality of life (didn't have to tell me that last part!)

Christine, I bet that you will love Sesame Place, too! The first time we went there, we took a three day weekend that was our family vacation for the year (finances have taken an upturn since then, but we enjoyed that trip so much!). I was, oh, 33? Something like that. And I could not stop smiling the whole first day. Walking down "Sesame Street," seeing the characters, was all just so much fun. And they have great water rides that are just as much fun for adults as for kids. Your older kids would probably have a good time too, although that could be prohibitely expensive. In fact, my Susannah, who is 12, just recently asked if we could take a day trip down there sometime soon. (If you let me know what weekend you're going, maybe we can meet you there. PM me about it if you're interested.)

Bring swimsuits, towels, lots of sunscreen, and of course, your Inner Child!

(Of course, I do feel very lucky that Jack and I got to go away on our own. Our last few vacations have all been with Jack's relatives, for various reasons, and even though we had a good time, there are times when you just don't want to have a cast of thousand along. We do have a family vacation planned for later in the summer, but a romantic weekend for just the grownups was way overdue.)

Wishing you happiness and good health, and all the best out of life.

          Peace, Carolyn

            Carolyn,
That trip sounds lovely. I'm glad eveything went well.....except for the cold! We'll just ignore those pesky viruses.
            Take care!

Oh yea, Carolyn, I'm sure we'll have a great time. We're not taking all of the kids because then we would go broke. We're going to try to get a hotel room for the weekend so we can go two days to the park. The older kids got to go to Hershey Park last weekend so they're fine, well Miranda didn't get to go because of a mountain of misbehavior but the boys had a great time.

I think we're going at the end of July or the beginning of August because his birthday is August 2nd and we'd like to do it close to his birthday. My boss is being really cool to, told me I could work extra hours during the week that we're going to go so I can leave early on Friday and not miss any time (don't have any more paid time off left for the year) so this should be a fun weekend for the three of us.

I agree - a bit envious, but more just glad you and your husband got a weekend away in Paris. It sounds like a lovely time. Sometimes just a couple of days a way is exactly what the doctor prescribed, so to speak!
