On very short notice, my husband was sent on a business trip to Paris. We had just one week to prepare! He wanted me to go with him for the fun of it (we made it a long weekend) and also so I could act as his guide and interpreter!
It was the most wonderful, romantic trip we've ever taken. We barely planned anything. I said to him, these are the two or three things that I absolutely want to do, and apart from that, we'll just do what we feel up to (which means, what I feel up to). Using my cane I was able to do much more walking than I thought I would. Everything worked out perfectly. We even went to a Thai restaurant with friends, and they were able to prepare a meal for me there that did not contain anything that would cause me to flare. I did have to skip some of my favorite French foods like ripe camembert cheese, but I had coffee every day and a little chocolate, and I did not flare. I have been very good on the diet before we went, and brought all my meds and some instill supplies just in case.
This trip was a complete surprise to both of us, and we didn't have much time to worry about my health issues. We just went. And it was wonderful. I guess it helps that we have both been in Paris before, so we did not feel a need to rush from monument to monument in the time we had. We did go into the Louvre museum just for a little while, and we took a dinner cruise on the Seine river (something I have always wanted to do, but could never afford before).
Maybe -- Paris is an easy city for me because I speak the language and I know my way around reasonably well. But it took some courage to make the trip, and it worked out better than I could have imagined. AND, my husband's business meeting went so well, that he may end up making several more trips over there!
So, I say, if you are not sure about a trip, take a chance. You can always decide you need a rest each afternoon, or maybe a whole day to rest. Maybe you won't do as much as you would if you were healthy, but it is still more than if you didn't go at all!
The only negative was that I caught a bad cold on the last day or on the way back, maybe. So I feel rotten now, but it's something that could happen to anyone. It's why I haven't posted much recently, and my head hurts so I'm going to have to get off the computer, but I SO wanted to share my success story with all of you!
