  • Need Help in Santa Barbara

My husband was diagnosed in 2010 with IC and IBS. We live in Santa Barbara, California. He is just beginning to test foods and has been on a limited diet for a long time. This has caused B-12 and iron deficiencies that we know of. Does anyone have IC/IBS and has figured out a plan for healthy and comfortable living. Also, does anyone know about help we can get in our area. We have found a good urologist, but all the other doctors, etc., seem to be in the dark. Any suggestions about local resources and IC/IBS would be most appreciated. Also, my husband has developed dry skin, dry mouth, dry eyes, dry throat, etc. Is this part of IC?

Are you working with the latest food list to develop his diet? If not, I suggest you print out a copy to help with IC safe foods. The link to the list is in my signature below.

    Good luck!

You mentioned that you have found a good uro but you need other referrals. Are you looking for a gastroenterologist and nutritionist or another type of medical professional who has knowledge of IC and IBS?

If he's on any medications for overactive bladder (which are sometimes rx'd to help with urinary frequency in IC patients) that could explain the dryness. Such meds are Ditropan, Detrol, Oxytrol, etc.

          ICN Donna--
Thank you for the suggestion of checking the IC diet. I know it well. We are following it and are testing different foods. It is slow going and a little confusing when you add the IBS. I don't really know how this posting works and think I put it in the wrong place--Vacations, etc. Really want to find out about Nutritionists, Registered Dieticians, Internists in Santa Barbara but not sure where to post--first time.
          Thanks again.

DG2901--Thank you for your idea. My husband is not on any medication currently for his IC or IBS conditions. However, he is taking other meds for other conditions. He takes levoxyl (hypothyroid), clonazapam (anxiety), trazadone (sleep), lorazepam (sleep--switching slowly to trazadone), just started doxycycline (rosacea), and omeprazole (reflux). Have asked a number of doctors if there is any problems caused by these meds, and they have not connected it to dryness. The dryness started several months after being diagnosed. He did have to take Elmiron (IC) and Terazasin (urinary retention caused by BPH). He had surgery for the BPH and finished treatment with Elmiron.
              Thanks,
              Bobbiann

I could give you a few suggestions for doctors I've seen or heard of and see if you have been in contact with the same one. So if you want to send me a private message through the forum here it would be good. The only problem is I still have not figured out how to reply to a private message on here and I can never get it to send. So - if you want you could send me your email address in SB and I could respond to that. If not it's ok, I would totaly understand not wanting to give out your private email.

Earthlady--Thank you for your help. I know very little about posting and nothing about IMs. Here is an e-mail account I have created for this purpose. It is [email protected]. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks.

Elmiron is not a medication that is usually stopped --- it can take up to six months or longer to become effective --- and when it helps, people usually continue to take it. Sometimes the dosage can be lowered, but it isn't usually stopped unless there are side effects or if it doesn't work.

Thank you for your input regarding Elmiron. My husband was on it for 9 months, and the doctor took him off because of many side effects.
                      Best.
