  • Sewing Anyone?

I just have to share. I have found a wonderful outlet for stress and a way for me to lose hours of time.

I cross stitch also but right before Thanksgiving I dug out my old sewing machine and started working on projects. First it was some cloth basket liners to go with some baskets for Christmas presents. Then I made some fleece auto organizers that hang over the seat with pockets for kids to put stuff in while in the car.

I have a quilt that I started years ago that I might dig out and work on again too. When my husband saw all I was doing with this he decided I needed a new machine. So in January he got me a new machine and I have not stopped since.

I never did do much before as far as clothes sewing and really never learned how to do it the right way. Well, now I am. I have made maternity clothes for my daughter, clothes for my granddaughter and just this weekend finished a jacket for my mom. I plan on making burp rags and baby blankets too for a fraction of the cost to buy new, ready made.

With the sewing message boards that I go to for help, I have really had some good results and the money you can save is unbelievable. I made a knit top and skirt for my GD in a size 6 for $1.00 worth of material and then just some elastic and thread. Another jacket I am going to make for my mom will be less than $7.00. If you watch fabric and pattern sales you can do very well.

I don't know about anyone else but sometimes I just can't find comfortable clothes and this will be great that I can make them to my comfort level. The quality of ready made in the stores sometimes isn't the greatest either.

I guess the purpose of this post is to maybe spark interest in a great hobby and a way to save some money. Not to mention pass the time. For me, especially if I am flaring, if I can find something to keep myself busy with I do better. I am home during the week anyway and when my husband doesn't feel well, which is quite frequently sometimes, this gives me something productive to do. I save money on clothes, I feel proud of what I accomplish and it keeps those brain cells working since I don't work anymore.

If you don't have a machine, the last one I had I picked up at a garage sale for $50.00. It is still working and I sure will work for years to come. You can also find them used at dealers for pretty reasonable. There are so many cute prints for kids, my GD just loves the things I make her.

I hope you all have a great day.

I also love to sew. I make lots of our clothing. Very soon I will ned to make some clothes for spring and summer. I have stacks of fabric so won't need to buy anything for a while, but I can never resist a bargain in fabric.

Hi, I love to knit, I find that very relaxing for me. I am planning to make some scarves for my granddaughter for next winter. I used to make a lot of latch hook rugs, I may go back to that again. Thanks for jogging the memory Jolene, and how much fun it can be, and saving money as well. Take care and happy projects gals, hugs Iris. hat

I, too, have gotten back into sewing. After my IC DX, I treated myself to my new dream sewing machine to give myself something to keep me and my mind busy when stuck at home and not feeling well. My old machine was 28 years old and out-of-date. Just love my new machine and am going nuts with it! I took a couple of quilting classes this winter, completed my first quilt and am starting to work on a major project----a memory quilt to present to my hubby when he retires in 10 months after almost 42 years of service to the Air Force (shhh---it's a surprise for him).

So glad I invested in my new machine as it is great therapy for me! Hmmm....would be nice if it could be counted as a tax deduction for medical therapy. Oh well, it is worth every penny and, with all the sewing I am doing, will save me money in the long run.

Looks like lots of us have had the same idea and are enjoying sewing. Maybe we should start a "sewing circle" section!

After I quit work I started the Mary-Madeline Project. We make buriel gowns out of donated wedding dresses. We also make blankets to go with them. Last week, we delivered 40 gowns and blankets to 4 hospitals. Those 4 hospitals needed preemie and newborn sizes. Next we will deliver them to all of the other hospitals (for babies who are stillborn). There was an article about me in the local newspaper in Sept. to get people to donate wedding gowns and to help sew. Friday, I was on a radio station talking about our project. Madeline was my granddaughter, she died 7 years ago at 6 weeks. My neighbor had a baby Mary who died after 4 days. It makes me feel good that I can contribute since I no longer work. I am going to take a sewing class. I do love to crochet the blankets, but I also want to be able to sew. Thanks for the great post!
