  • Going to a Spine Center...unbearable pain!

    Hi ladies,
please say a prayer for me. I have a herniated disc at L5 and I've been in so much pain for months now! My primary care doc is hesitant to give me a script for pain meds and told me that I'm too young to have this sort of pain(47)! I was very discouraged when she told me that! I could tell that she wasn't going to help me and that I would just suffer with this horrible pain! I have done physical therapy...and did not get any good results from it.

Tuesday I got a call from my insurance company explaining a service called "Complex Care". I signed up for it because it gives me access to a nurse 24/7. This service is supposed to be in addition to my normal care with my primary doc. The nurse that I'm assigned to was upset that I got no further help after the pt did not help. She urged me to contact a neurologist on my own. Instead I called my primary doc and told her that it is unacceptable for me to lay in pain day after day and she not help me! Finally she gave me a rushed referral to a spine center. I don't know what's going to happen from here but I'm desperate to get some help!

    Thanks Aleet7

How awful that must be. We use our back in darn near everything we do so I would imagine having pain there would be quite limiting!

Hopefully the spine center will have something more to offer you towards finding relief, Teela.

What can you say to that? Too young? Sheesh!

I'm sorry both you and Briza are having to deal with these additional painful conditions. One would think IC would be enough for any one person!

Thanks Vicki and Donna! Bri... I did the physical therapy and I tried to stay positive but lately I've been laying down all day with lower back pain and pain in both legs! I feel like it is inhumane to just suffer and hurt with only tylenol to take! I'm starting to get angry because my doc feels like since we are the same age that I should not be in this much pain! Like you...I've had MRI's that say I have a bulging disc...narrowing and possible spurs! I thought that explained my pain but obviously not! I'm afraid that I'm going to live in this kind of pain forever....it's depressing at times! I was very hopeful about therapy but I'm still having the same issues after months of therapy.

Bri I hope that your therapy is successful! As if having IC isn't enough....

I know exactly what you mean...I walk slow, sometimes I limp and sometimes I'm dragging a leg because of the weakness! I feel very old and I'm not happy about that! My father had arthritis in his back and he was on a cane at my age! It can be very depressing at times!

I am praying that the Spine Center will be of some help! I'm praying that pt gives you some relief!

          Best Wishes,
          Teela

I too had pain in the same area that you are having right now, so I really feel for you. I went from doctor to doctor (primary care kept sending me to either PT or neuro but nothing help. Around that time, my insurance change carriers and I had to find me a new doctor....he at the time gave me a scrpt for pain meds and told me if that didn't help he would find a neuro who did. I finally went to this neuro and after having tests done (more of the same) and telling me that everything was ok, but that he can see that I was in terrible pain he did surgery on me. I was 38 at the time. Good luck hoping you can find a doctor who will help you.

Mary how are you since your back surgery? Today I gave the Spine center all of my info. I'm waiting for my appointment date. I'm praying that this doc will help me.

                  Thank you!

Hi Bri! I went to the Spine center Friday. I found out the details of my MRI...my primary doc never told me the details! I have two bulging discs with tears in both of them! I also have arthritis in 3 joints in my spine! The doc said either of these conditions can cause lots of pain! I was prescribed Cymbalta(now approved for lower back pain and osteoarthritis)! I haven't taken any yet because I read some horrible stories about Cymbalta being addictive and having withdrawal side affects compared to Heroine withdrawal! If someone reads this that has taken Cymbalta please inform me on your experience taking this med! I'm in a lot of pain but afraid that I'll have some of the awful side affects like in all the stories I've read on the internet!

I did get prescribed Vicoden...it helps some but I'm afraid that I need to take a chance with the Cymbalta...maybe my low dose won't be as bad as what the others are talking about.....
