  • question about cereals

    I have mild ic and pelvic floor dysfunction. I find that when i am away for a vacation, my ic improves dramatically - My major change is that i don't eat breakfast cereals like Cheerios- i basically eat fattening foods like pancakes and waffles. Also, the water is different than at home ( i even wonder if different water sources can be an irritant). Any opinions? thanks.

    I have noticed for me, things like Cheerios are a problem. They have a fair amount of potassium (sp?) which normaly bothers people with IC.

    Try eliminating them when you are at home and see if that maked a difference.

    Medical "Issues":
    Tachycardia(resting rate is 125-130 )
    Tramadol-as needed (IC)-50mg
    Elmiron 200mg twice a day
    Levsin .125mg 1-2 pills 4 times a day

      Cheerios & most commercial cereals contain added vitamins & minerals, which can flare IC. They also are packaged using BHA or BHT as a preservative, which can also cause an increase in IC symptoms.

      I buy cereals at the health food store or Whole Foods, making sure I read the labels for no added minerals or vitamins, no preservatives, all IC-safe ingredients.

      Sometimes water can bother me. My IC does not like Evian, Dasani, or Fiji water. I'm okay with Arrowhead, Crystal Geyser, Aquafina.

      -IC diet
      -Elavil 50mg at night
      -Continuous use birth control pills (4-5 periods/year)

      -Managing stress= VERY important!
      -Fur therapy: Hugging the cat!

          I noticed the same thing over Christmas vacation -- I felt good most of the time I was away! However, I didn't feel the same a month earlier when I went away for Thanksgiving. My husband and I decided it might be the water -- our California water is not great by any standards, and though we had a filter in our fridge, I'm not sure how effective it was. We were at my husband's house over Thanksgiving and I've never really trusted their water either, they have a water softener that makes me a little nervous :-) But the Utah water I drank over Christmas seemed pretty good, and I really did feel better.

          Anyway, my very "frugal" husband decided it was worth a try to switch to bottled water, and that's all I've had since we've been home. I'm feeling MUCH better, but don't know how much is due to the amitryptiline really kicking in (started it in October) and how much may be due to the water. I just use the grocery brand spring water for the most part and I've felt very good. Dasani water absolutely flares me, I have to stay away from it.

          I don't eat much cereal anymore, so can't comment on that except to say that processed foods aren't very kind to my bladder, so I'd follow Kadi's suggestion to try natural alternatives. Also, you may be sensitive to the milk -- do you drink much milk other than putting it on your cereal?

          It's worth a try to switch to one kind of water and see how it goes. When you think about how much water you drink, and how it all goes through the bladder, it makes sense that something like that could have a huge impact.
