  • Avocados causing pain!

I've been flaring a lot lately and I know it started by me cheating and drinking a bit of hubby's coffee in the morning. At first it didn't bother me and I thought....yeah!!!....sure enough, it hit me. After having a few gulps of it yesterday morning the pain set in. I knew I would have to stop. So here I am in a flare and think I am eating my IC safe foods. I had grilled turkey cutlets for dinner, salad with olive oil only and avocado. An hour later the pain started and continued all night. This morning I was still sore. I knew I would have to give it a little more time to calm down.I decided to make lunch to take to the office...leftover turkey with avocado on sliced bread. An hout later....the pain set in. By dinner the pain was worse. My dinner was OK but the I cracked some raw nuts. I can't believe the pain! I've been able to handle a walnut or almond here or there and even some avocado with dinner but this is crazy! I didn't even know avocados were on the list of foods to avoid. I'm sure that I am more sensitive since I am flaring because there have been times when it did not bother me. I picked up a book by
Dr. Larrian Gillsepie tonight and read through some chapter and sure enough avocados were listed as a good to avoid as well as nuts.
My bladder is so angry right now! I thought I was eating healthy and not irritating my bladder........boy was I wrong
I bought some chestnuts and now an second guessing whether I should make them. I don't know if they caused me pain in the past...but then again I may have had a few at a time when my bladder was ok....or if I did flare...I may have thought it was from something else.
has anyone had any experience with plain roasted chestnuts?
Anyone else have a rough time with Avocados?
I just started Lyrica tonight and am hoping that it will help with some of the burning that I have......that's if I tolerate it ok.

Yes, i made the mistake with the Avacodos too :-(

They were such a quick healthy snack, and I didnt recall seeing it on the avoid list, but then I checked the print out the uro office gave me and sure enough it was on the maybe Ok list, along with the nuts.

Have you tried soaking the almonds in water overnight? When i made almond milk, i had to soak the almonds...and it didnt flare me at all.

I hope your body can tolerate the lyrica. Just stick to the foods you know are OK for you until the bladder calms down

I eat avocado all the time. SOmetimes bladder pain but I don't know anymore from what. I need some kind of fat in my diet. My body craves it from losing so much weight. So either take the pain and sustain weight or shrivel. And no, doctors dont know whats wrong with me still

Thanks for the responses. There have been times when I did have some avocado and I don't think anything happened. Maybe it's just because I am in a flare so I am more sensitive.
Mich, I'm sorry you couldn't take the avocado either but now I feel like I am not alone with all the diet issues. My bladder has gotten so sensitive. I see that you also tried Lyrica. Did it not help you or was it that you couldn't tolerate it? I took neurontin years ago and slowly built myself up to 300 mgs and was ok with it....not sure how much it helped though. Then I decided to go off all meds and try an alternative approach. That didn't help so when I decided to go back to the Neurontin I couldn't tolerate it! It had been about 2years that I had taken it and it caused me terrible vertigo. I felt dizzy and weird all day.
I took Lyrica 25 mg last night (small dose) but woke up at 2:00 and ate 2 cookies......hhhmmmmmmmmm ...something about that med that didn't let me sleep thorugh the night.
I had been taking half a soma which I am finally ok with and lets me sleep thought the entire night....with no problems in morning. I didn't want to mix the 2 last night so I didn't take the soma.....I might have to add it in tonight. I'ts so hard to find the right mx of things when you are so sensitive.
This morning my bladder still hurts.............avocado and nuts are definatley out! Maybe when it is better I can try a tiny amont. I love avocados so much!
I too crave the fat from it! Tabasco , I hope you can start to get some answers soon. SEe how you feel if you don't eat them.
        hang in there..........

I can have half a avocado on occasion. I tried to eat them regularly as breakfast and I had the worst pain ever. It took me one week to understand it's the avocados.

Avocado isn't a problem for me, but I don't eat much of it when I do. It might be that you just got too much of a good thing! You might want to try taking three or four Tums or even some baking soda in water to try to calm down your flare. Be sure you drink enough water --- that will help too (don't drown yourself, however).

I hope you're feeling better very soon.

            Hugs,

              Hey Mel,
I cannot eat Avocados, I think its because they have a lot of potassium in them.. Just like bananas, they bother me to..Its a shame to, because that was my two favorite things I enjoyed eating...

Thanks again for sharing your stories. I can't eat a lot fo bananas either. I went through that a while ago and had to stop. I recently started having half a banana with breakfast but am going to cut that out for a while too. Everything is just too inflamed! Last night I took pure caclium carbonate. I have it as a powder with no added ingredients. It's the same stuff that it is in Tums. I also drank some hot water with just honey. This morning is better although not gone. I feel the burning and pain so will continue along this path. I stopped at the store and got some plain tums and just took two of them now.
Who would have thought it was the avocados???!!! It's a good thing I started to read through the book "You Don't Have to Live with Cystitis". There is was as plain as day. Nuts are a no no too. In the past if I had one or two I wasn't bothered but....my bladder was probably a little better then too. What a frustating disease!!
                Thanks for the support.

                  sIGH

Avocadoes are one of the few things that I wish so much that I can eat but never can. I re-try them every 3 months to see...and always flare. Them and bananas...
30 year old Mother, Midwife, Birth Doula, Herbalist, and Massage Therapist with sudden onset of IC approx. 2/16/05 (after a PAP smear and routine gynecological exam). I tried a HUGE list of natural and alternative treatments (including Cystoprotek, Desert Harvest Aloe, Aloe gel, Glucosamine/Chondroitin, L-Argenine, Quercitin/Bromelain, Marshmallow Root...etc) for the first 9 months of having IC, without much relief, until I finally researched and started Elmiron.

                  My experience:
~Previously took Elmiron 100mg three times a day
                  (9/29/05-7/06)
~Experimented with dosage (1-2 Elmiron a day recapped into a plain gelcap) and did well with occasional mild flares. (7/06-9/09)
~Stopped all together at the 1 year mark (9/29/06) for 10 days. Still felt good, with low-level symptoms.
~Decided to go back on it (10/16/06) to see if another year on it will bring me into full (zero symptoms) remission. Currently taking 1-2 pills a day, recapped into a plain gelcap.
~ 6/08...Tried to go off Elmiron again, had huge flare at the 3 week mark, went back on 100mg once a day for maintenance.
-I went off Elmiron for 2 months due to pregnancy and had a complete relapse of IC symptoms to pre-diagnosis levels of pain/frequency. I then went back on Elmiron at 10-12 weeks, but was unable to take it further due to severe morning sickness. The 2nd/3rd trimesters were MUCH better IC-wise, and postpartum is the best I have felt in years. I am no longer on Elmiron for now.
-20 month postpartum remission from 4/17/09 to 12/10/10.
-Out of remission after a pap smear on 12/10/10. Pap smears are obviously the main IC trigger for me. Currently trying to cope with loss of the remission.

                  Also doing:
~Sugar-free/gluten free and strict IC diet (With an emphasis on organic, alkaline and whole foods)
                  ~Prenatal DHA/Fish oil supplement
                  ~Vitamin D supplement
                  ~Culturelle probiotic

                    avacados

avacados are a non-no for me as well as nuts but to get some of the fats you need from them try thisi take an avacado and and mix in a little mayonaise kind of likeyou would for tuna and 1/2 tablespoon of salsa and a small bit of onion diced really small.. then i separate it into very small plastic containers and freeze it , i take one out at a time and use it to spread on bread then put my turkey and cheese on .i use it on low carb tortillsas with string cheese . melt it in the oven first then put your avacado mix on it . theres alot you can do with this and ive found this ti ny amount gives you flavor and no pain

I've had small amounts avocado with meals in the past with no problem but I guess my bladder was already angry and couldn't tolerate the large dose of it a few days in a row! Bananas use dto do it to me to so I stopped them for a long time. I recently started to add a half back in with breakfast and thought I was doing OK... All this at the same time was too much. It was like the straw that broke the camels back.
I appreciate that avocado recipe but don't think I will be able to tolerate it. I can't do any salsas or onions..........and now won't be doing avocados for a while either.
This just reminded of a time that I was into artichokes and ate quite a bit of them and wound up flaring. They're also high in potassium. I had to cut them out for a while too. Now, I'll only have a small amount of one.....and then again only when my bladder is feeling better.
                      Thanks guys,
                      Mel

Mel, our bladders seem to be very similar,

I too tried artichokes, I love them, couldnt tolerate them, I looked at the can and found it had citric acid, so not sure if it was that or not, havent tried the fresh ones. Honestly i live on zucchini and peas most days, along with chicken.

To answer your question, i tried lyrica, but couldnt tolerate the side affects, and it didnt seem to work for me, i noticed neurontin started working in a few days.

I could never have anything canned with citric acid! It's one of the things that I aboslutely avoid. I had :fresh" artichokes....just a little too much of them. But, now that I think back I may have stewed them stove top with onions!
I now no longer do onions either! I learned the hard way with that. Mom made me some homemade chicken soup when I was sick and within an hour I was in agony. She left out the tomatoes for me but loaded up on the onions!!!
I now make chicken soup without onions! Just water chicken, carrots, celery, some fresh parsley and salt. No pepper either.!
I am thinking of starting a journal so record my reacxtions to various meds and foods. Sometimes I forget how I reacted to thinngs and then I make the same mistakes again!
I hope you are doing OK!

Leeks are a good onion substitute and some of us can have them. I actually like them better than onions. I can also have some onion if it's cooked thoroughly. I do always buy the sweet ones.
