  • IC Diet Stage 1 and Constipation

I'm a newbie and I am in Phase I of IC Diet, am focusing on eating only from the "usually ok" column.

Previously my body was used to taking in 25-30 of protein from berries, fruits, veggies, whole wheat bread, etc.

Now, I am finding on the IC diet that these foods are very low in fiber and I'm constipated.

Does anyone have tried and true fiber supplements that are IC friendly? Because it seems so many grains are off limits, I was wondering about psyllium.

Unfortunely most of the commercial dietary fiber supps are full of preservatives, colors, and crap I can't pronounce.

Please help. I think my IC symptoms get worse from straining.

I suggest you talk with your doctor about trying a stool softener, such as Colace, for a while until your body becomes accustomed to the diet change. You'll want to be certain you are drinking enough water as well.

It's never okay to strain. It will only make it worse. As a temporary solution, you might take some milk of magnesia and/or use a fleets enema to keep from straining.

Thank you. I have been taking Dulcolax stool softener, but it actually makes things too soft, which is why I strain. Sounds weird, but that's just the way things are for me.

I think I need bulk. Not softening.

However, I had not thought of Milk of Magnesia. I might try that.

What is mom's? What is in it? If it causes you pain, why take it? I'm new and trying to learn what is out there. I bought some psyllium capsules with oat bran, corn bran and pea fiber in them. Nothing else. I seem to be doing okay...I think

I used to use Wal Mart's brand of Citrucel tablets, no excess gas with those, also used Benefiber's powder, couldn't taste it on food or in beverages. Definitely discuss your issues with your doctor & see what he/she has to say & recommend.

Thanks, Donna. I should have been able to figure that out, but alas, my mind is somewhere else these days.

I might give that a try.
