  • White Chocolate Reeses

So I tried the white chocolate reeses today because I was on a big day trip and craved gas station candy like the "old days".

I am flaring now, haven't flared an awhile! I can't even remember the last time. I don't do sugar well, but usually it causes a migraine, not a bladder flare. Now my head feels fine but not my bladder. I can eat peanut butter w/o problems so it wasn't that part...This is depressing, I enjoyed them so much. I know that others can eat them...what gives?

Now I'll never get to try the white chocolate kitkats...I'll be too scared.

I didn't take prelief with them, maybe I should have? I thought that they would be low acid because of the white chocolate, maybe I was wrong.
30 year old Mother, Midwife, Birth Doula, Herbalist, and Massage Therapist with sudden onset of IC approx. 2/16/05 (after a PAP smear and routine gynecological exam). I tried a HUGE list of natural and alternative treatments (including Cystoprotek, Desert Harvest Aloe, Aloe gel, Glucosamine/Chondroitin, L-Argenine, Quercitin/Bromelain, Marshmallow Root...etc) for the first 9 months of having IC, without much relief, until I finally researched and started Elmiron.

    My experience:
~Previously took Elmiron 100mg three times a day
    (9/29/05-7/06)
~Experimented with dosage (1-2 Elmiron a day recapped into a plain gelcap) and did well with occasional mild flares. (7/06-9/09)
~Stopped all together at the 1 year mark (9/29/06) for 10 days. Still felt good, with low-level symptoms.
~Decided to go back on it (10/16/06) to see if another year on it will bring me into full (zero symptoms) remission. Currently taking 1-2 pills a day, recapped into a plain gelcap.
~ 6/08...Tried to go off Elmiron again, had huge flare at the 3 week mark, went back on 100mg once a day for maintenance.
-I went off Elmiron for 2 months due to pregnancy and had a complete relapse of IC symptoms to pre-diagnosis levels of pain/frequency. I then went back on Elmiron at 10-12 weeks, but was unable to take it further due to severe morning sickness. The 2nd/3rd trimesters were MUCH better IC-wise, and postpartum is the best I have felt in years. I am no longer on Elmiron for now.
-20 month postpartum remission from 4/17/09 to 12/10/10.
-Out of remission after a pap smear on 12/10/10. Pap smears are obviously the main IC trigger for me. Currently trying to cope with loss of the remission.

    Also doing:
~Sugar-free/gluten free and strict IC diet (With an emphasis on organic, alkaline and whole foods)
    ~Prenatal DHA/Fish oil supplement
    ~Vitamin D supplement
    ~Culturelle probiotic

I am eating white chocolate right now as I read this.......just ran for the PRELIEF!!! Thank you! You may have saved my bladder

I don't know what got you. White chocolate is supposed to be okay. I've read that peanut butter can be an irritant. Do you think it could have been that? Maybe you are okay with white chocolate, maybe the white chocolate in reese's is somehow different than the white chocolate in a kit kat, ya know? How soon after you ate the reese's did you flare?

I do fine with white chocolate. One thing you might do is to buy a package of white chocolate chips so you can try eating three or four to see if it bothers you. Trader Joes has white chocolate bars that are yummy. In our store, they are up front, near the check stands.

        Diagnosed August 2001

Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Effexor (for depression & anxiety)

Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA, Lexapro (for depression & anxiety, but also helped my IC) (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)

I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for about 8 years now.

I am very diet sensitive, but am okay with the white chocolate kit kats.
I think Donna's idea is a very good one, to try the white chocolate chips, see if you are ok with those, then go from there.
You might also try any of these "experiments" with Prelief, might lessen a flare if you get one.

For another candy bar, I found a carob rice crunch bar (like a Nestle's Crunch, but carob) at my health food store. They are for sale in the ICN Shop too. http://icnshop.com/cgi-bin/ustorekee...s-Candies.html Pretty good, considering it's not chocolate. No white sugar either, just barley malt. I ate a little bit, alternating bites with a pear & it felt like the old days eating chocolate & fruit on a picnic. Worth a try maybe?

It's always so disappointing when an "experiment" fails.
Hoping you find a new treat---

Maybe it was just the big car trip that set your bladder off. Long car rides do it to me everytime.

Why is chocolate a no no? The caffine? Is in an acid?
For that matter, what is wrong with tofu and soy (acid?)

                Lindt white chocolate

                Hi,

I'm fine with Lindt white chocolate and white chocolate with almonds. I especially like the Lindt Excellence white chocolate since it has natural vannilla not the artificial type.

I tried Baker's white chocolate chips and they didn't bother me.

I would think that the peanut butter in the white chocolate reeses is different from the peanut butter in Jiff etc.... I've always found the texture and taste of Reeses peanut butter filling to be a bit different and it's probably loaded with other stuff to make the taste more candy-like and less lunch-like...

White chocolate Lindt has always worked for me but when I was still diet sensitive I stayed away from the white chocolate reeses and kit kats... I was fine though with the white chocolate crunch, and white chocolate twix.

I think sacausa maybe on to something..
Its probably the peanut butter in the reeses.. I can eat the homeade reeses, but not the store bought ones..the homemade are just peanut butter and powder sugar, rolled into a ball and dipped in melted white chocolate..Reeses is my favorite candy, so I learned how to make these.. You can put them in the fridge and they last awhile and I have never had a flare from the ones I make

Oh and you can even add rice krispies to them..
                      Hugs

I'm thinking the chemicals and preservatives that make up the creamy centre probably did it. I can eat white chocolate, but definitely not Reeses. I tried once too, and ta da ------FLARED!!! Had a Rice Krispie square last night, and flared from that too. I've been way too careless with my diet lately. I'm cooking at home for a long while now!!! Sugar bugs my bladder too especially if I eat it too close to bedtime.
