I'm thinking that was a mistake but I've been struggling with a bacteria overgrowth in my bowels and am getting desperate! Maybe I'll learn that soy and yogurt are okay for me since I haven't tried either. Hopefully I won't be paying for this later!

I hope you won't either. It might be a good idea now to take a prelief, eat some tums, or even mix some baking soda in some water and slam it just to possible ward off any reactions. Soy is one of the few things that absolutely will bother me, but I can have things like natural soy sauce in small amounts. The thing is, don't "trick" yourself into thinking it's bad for you already and expect to have a flare, because then the stress might make you have one. Operate on the assumption that it is ok, and if it isn't, your body will tell you soon enough. -
I'm allergic to normal dairy so the main alternative open to me is soy products.
Until getting pregnant, I had NO problem with soy... always wondered about it too since it flares so many others. But I was fine - Soy milk, yogurt, icecream, tempeh, tofu... whatever.
You may not have an issue. If you don't flare - then great! At least you know that you have something else that you can have occassionally for variety.
Since getting pregnant - soy has bugged my bladder, so I'm staying away from it for now.
That's my experience with soy.
