  • not much for me to eat

I'm new to IC.. I just had surgery a week ago ( i have to pee so much but it burns so bad from the surgery.. everyone knows when i go to the bathroom because im usually screaming haha).. but anyway.. I'm starting the diet as soon as possible.. however, I am allergic to dairy (milk, cheese, butter, etc.).. I substitue regular milk with rice based milk.. I know that alot of the foods for an IC diet contain alot of dairy (or so ive noticed).. does anyone else have this problem?.. what am i suppose to eat??.. I dont want to just fill up on carb's because I cant exercise that much because it really bothers my IC.. please help!

you poor thing. That does cut out a lot of foods. I eat a lot of fajitas, chicken, potatoes, rice, salads, pears, soups with a little cooked onion, talapia, turkey burgers, veggies, mushrooms, and I want to branch out a little more. I had some delicious scallops at a restaurant the other day. I think you should just try to eat a lot of different types of veggies and protein. Melons might be okay occasionally and blueberries and blackberries too.
I want to cut out more carbs too. At first, that was like the basis of my diet.

thanks everyone for the quick responses.. as for the string cheese.. i cant have that.. if i have any type of cheese.. my throat closes up.. so i def 100% do not touch dairy.. im thinking about maybe eating fish.. and shrimp.. even though im not fond of seafood.. i dont see me having any choice.. is it okay to eat lettuce and greens?

ABliske- what is talapia? is that a dumb question that i have no idea what that is? haha

Oh, that's just a type of fish that isn't too expensive.
Do you like pork or red meat? I try to stay away from those. Lettuce and green are fine.

I don't like pork too much.. red meat is okay.. last night i had flounder almondine.. i think i did okay.. im not sure what im reacting to yet because im still healing from the surgery and i feel like my bladder is full all the time even though its not.. but so far i absolutely no that i cannot have chocolate, cranberry juice, and candy with alot of artificial sweetners.. i spent my night sleeping on the bathroom floor because i was getting to tired to walk back and forth from bed to the bathroom after i had those 3 things..

thanks leelee for the link to that website.. i just printed it out.. its very helpful.. and i like your quote about God.. its true that He will bring me through this.

you guys are all so wonderful.. thanks for the help!.. i hope that one day i will be symptom free

Talapa fish is very good esp if you grill it, but its also good just in the oven baked.. You should be all right with many green foods, like green beans or turnip greens, lettuce, cabbage.. I can eat all of them.. As a matter of fact I can eat most veggies, just not the ones that are real acidy like tomatoes or peppers..You can get some non dairy butter to cook with to.. Or you can use it on toast with some Blueberry Jam..If you like oatmeal it is very good for you also helps with alot of meds you know keep you regular..White rice is another thing I eat alot.. I know the carbs kill me.. Really we are all just so differant and IC effects us all in so many ways..So the best thing is just to start out on just a few things and the slowly add back some things.. You will be able to tell pretty quick if its not going to work..I wish I could have helped more..(((((hugs))))))

Sounds like you will be living on carbs, meat, maybe eggs, nuts that you can tolerate, veggies made without IC triggers, and pears! I'm sorry to hear you are allergic to dairy. It is different than intolerance. I would look at crockpot recipes, add IC friendly meats, veggies, and seasonings. Have a side of rice and pears for dessert. I am certainly not a cook, so I would look through recipes, add IC friendly incredients, and see how it goes!

FYI.... had switched over to rice milk myself, but recently read that it MAY cause problems with IC. I was still struggling, so I thought it might be causing me trouble. Almond milk was definitely on the CAN HAVE list, so I switched to that and seem to be doing a little better. This information is from the book sold by ICN...."Customizing the IC Diet" or something along that line.

                      Best wishes,
                      Darlene

Interesting comments about the milk. I was wondering if the non-organic milk had some preservatives or chemicals that could irritate the bladder.. so I thought about getting the organic milk and see if that helps. Maybe I will try rice or almond milk. Boy... I'm eating/drinking things I'd never consider pre-IC.

Do you find some beans better than others? (diff. brands, canned vs dry, prep like refried vs. baked, etc)?

Also... cooking eggs... I am cooking impaired... so bare with me. How do you boil eggs so they are not overcooked or undercooked? I stopped cooking eggs that way because I always mess it up.

                          Thank you!

I like to cook and have always cooked the classic American dinner, even before IC...meat, chicken, or seafood, steamed veggie or salad, and potato or rice, even before IC. I often do just a carb and steamed veggies, or just protein and veggies. Eating this way has helped me maintain my weight, even before IC. Luckily I've found I can tolerate fruits (good thing, because I HATE pears), especially if I accompany fruit with a protein. I boil eggs by the dozen, don't like the yolk, but eat it a couple times a week because it has tons of nutrients. Having boiled eggs on hand, I can eat them for breakfast with fruit and milk, egg salad for lunch with whole wheat bread, and if I'm not that hungry or feel like cooking dinner, then I make a salad topped with nuts and boiled egg whites for protein. Salad dressing I make my own...olive oil, garlic, cracked pepper, and a tiny bit of lemon juice. If I'm flaring, I use just olive oil and dried or fresh herbs.
I really don't need eat much dairy other than milk, and try to get my protein from lowfat meats and beans and eggs. I try to make a big pot of beans every weekend to get me thru the week when I know I'm going to be on a cooking strike. White rice alone is not that good for you, but when eaten with beans, it creates a complete protein.
Hope this gives you some ideas. As you figure out what your triggers are, you'll find that you can probably eat many more things than those on the "safe" list. I've found my main triggers are vinegar, pickled stuff, canned or bottled stuff with preservatives. I can eat most anything, as long as it is fresh, no preservatives. Best wishes.

have you tried raw milk. Most people who are allergic to regular milk are not allergic to raw milk. If available where you live.
