Can we eat baked beans? Does anyone have a good recipe to share? I just had my first family BBQ, with IC, and felt very isolated and depressed. I basically couldnt eat anything they had. Everyone was walking around with plates loaded with foods that i can no longer tolerate. It was so hard. But if I can bring stuff to eat and share I would feel better. I would love to know if anyone has a recipe for safe potato salad or other salads that are summer BBQ friendly! I ended up eating a plain burger and some plain chips. I was pretty upset. I know there are going to be more summertime BBQ's coming up and I would really appreciate any suggestions you all have!

I can eat Bush's baked beans. You might take along a veggie platter with things like celery, cauliflower, etc., and an IC friendly dip.

Baked Beans Yummy
I too can eat Bush Baked Beans Vegetarian style and I can eat potato salad coleslaw, corn and watermelon. I eat BBQ chicken but scrape off as much of the sauce and skin that I can. If I get a little sauce it doesn't seem to matter. I can eat natural tortilla chips with organic mild salsa. I can eat Hebrew National Knockworst and ground beef from Whole Foods market.I am ok with any buns for some reason even if they are made from enriched flour. Crackers made from enriched flour I cannot tolerate for some reason?I never drink soda and always read bottled water labels before drinking them ( they must have no minerals or vitamins added). I pretty much only drink milk, water or black coffee (only 1/2 cup a day),and on occasion I now enjoy A&W Rootbeer o,n ice icecream ,wine, vodka tonics, and Margaritas from Outback ! When I first started out with IC I was afraid of all these foods. Sugar aggravates my bladder but apparently some things with sugar in them do not bother me. GO FIGURE! After 3 years I am still experimenting!!Comment

wow, I was worried about baked beans because they usually have a tomato base and onions in them. Maybe I will give them a try soon to see if I can tolerate them. THANKS!Comment

Katie,
I know just how you feel! I just got back from a week long vacation with my family and all we did was go to family barbecues' and it was so hard for me! I could barely eat anything the whole time I was there and I was getting so aggravated. The only thing I could eat at the barbecues was a plain cheeseburger ( and I hate it without my ketchup) and some plain potatoe chips. I couldnt' even drink the bottled water they had because it had potassium and minerals in it and that kills me! I used to love barbecues and now I dread them. I missed eating my potatoe and macaroni salad and my barbecue sauce! It was really hard for me to because I was away, so it wasn't like I could cook my own foods or bring my own you know? I had a really tough time being away and staying with family because they had hardly anything in the house that I could eat! So that was hard.

Oh, it feels good to know I'm not alone! They had big bowls of potato salad, cole slaw, italian sausage in sauce, hot dogs at the BBQ I went to and everyone was eating away and kept asking me, "arent you going to eat?". I felt really depressed! I didnt want to keep explaining to everyone why I couldn't eat any of the foods! I know there will be more summer BBQ's coming and I"m dreading them. Such a bummer!Comment

Traveling
I think we have all experienced that terrible lonely feeling of everyone else eating and there we sitIt is very sad.
I am going on a trip this weekend and am not looking forward to being in the hotel with none of my safe comfort-foods galore around me. Being on the plane and being in the airports is always a hungry time for me. I just learned last trip that a lot of the bottled waters at airports have minerals in them which kill me. I got a terrible flare which lasted my whole trip- but now I know what to watch out for.Comment

wow, not even water is safe! Yikes! We really have to read every single label before we put anything in our mouth! I'm embarrassed that I Have to ask the waitress a million questions about the food I order. Why do all the restaurants have to marrinate all the meats? Geez! plus its wierd when they ask, soup or salad and I have to say NEITHER, Ugh! thank god for this website or I'd cry from loneliness with IC....my hubby cracks little jokes about my "bag" that I take every time we leave the house. Its a little insulated bag, that looks almost like a purse and I never leave home, even for a one hour trip to the store, without it. It has my "Safe" snacks and bottled water in it. I'm just afraid I'm gonna get stuck somewhere and get hungry or thirsty. But the family BBQ's are a new source of misery for me. I'm sure I"ll go through more problems when the holidays roll around...Comment

Yes, I agree, it's so hard when your traveling. When I was on the plane coming home yesterday, I was so thirsty on the plane(and since you can't bring your own water anymore) I had asked the flight attendant for some water, and it was Dasani water which I can't have! I was just so thirsty so I took a few sips anyway and paid for it later. I never knew there were differences in waters either until I read these boards! I agree, it is hard going to restaurants also, I never know what I'm really getting and get so afraid to order anything. I usually do get the salad though and just put some Olive Oil on it.
I was getting embarrased though while I was away and visiting with everyone and they would bring out food or offer you stuff and I had to check all the ingredients on everything and say NO to just about everything. Everyone kept asking all week, gosh you can't have this either, you can't have that, what CAN you have! I too was getting so tired of explaining and after awhile just kept saying, No thanks, I'm not hungry. Meanwhile, I was starving! ha-ha.......It really stinks. BUT one good thing about it, I didn't gain any weight for the first time ever, from being on vacation!! ha-ha. I've been trying to lose weight since January and have been doing pretty good, so I guess I was happy about not gaining on vacation, but it still stinks.....
