  • Cranberry Juice helps my IC

When I have flare I drink alot of water. But cranberry juice seems to be what calms things down. Anyone else find this? I was dx w/IC in 1/07 w/hydrodistention and cystoscopy. I know cranberry juice is on the NO list but why does it help?

    Hugs

    Cindy

Cranberry juice is almost always irritating to an IC bladder. I would discourage anyone with IC from drinking it. It's pouring acid into an already irritated bladder.

I'm not even very diet sensitive and I have not even dared to try cranberry juice or anything with cranberries in it since I was diagnoised. If green tea gives me flares for several days I surely don't want to try cranberry juice, ouch!
      Christine

I have been diagnoised for 6 1/2 years now. I have taken a long break from the ICN but really miss helping out my fellow IC patients and want to get back into posting.
1st hydro 4/07 showed no visible signs of IC but tons of mast cells in all my biopsy samples which did prove IC.
2nd hydro 4/13/09 showed dark purple glomerulations and I had a capacity of 450 cc's. This hydro proved that my IC had progressed.
I have tried every oral medication as well as rescue instills and DMSO.

I have been lucky enough to see Dr Hanno, the top IC specialist in PA who has told me due to the fact that I have not responded to any "standard" treatments that I have a severe, end stage case of IC with a horrible quality of life (didn't have to tell me that last part!)

            Cranberry pills

I also am not affected by cranberry juice. I was drinking it for a few days and switched over to the pills because I couldn't stand the taste of the cranberry juice. I notice when I don't take my cranberry pills, my frequency issues act up. I however, cannot tolerate many other foods, as I am still discovering what is a trigger for me.

I am just taking Calcium citrate and Acidopholis and the pill (levlite). I was on Elmiron but it flared me up in the vulva/vagina and I started having alot of Gyne issues. My doc did a biopsy and said it was a reaction to a drug and told me to stop the Elmiron for 2 weeks. I am going back today to see what he says next.

I'm not really very diet sensitive either, but I can not, EVER take even a sip of cranberry juice. It turns my bladder into a firey ball of pain. I love it, especially Cran-Grape, and as a test a few months ago I bought a bottle of it, drank one glass of it and was in the flare from hades for days. I can't even drink the less acidic white cranberry without risking pain. I've got NO idea why it doesn't bother you unless your bladder has most of it's lining intact. Pouring cranberry juice into a bladder that is missing a lot of it's lining is like literally pouring acid in there.

04/17/09 Crohn's disease almost killed me with a combo of extreme constipation from pain medications. My bowel ruptured, I almost died from peritonitis and spent several days in the ICU then more in a private room on the floor. If you have any questions about severe constipation from pain meds please don't hesitate to send me a message.

                        Ladie's,
It look's like I have a serious problem here then.
My uro surgeon has told me to drink a large glass of cranberry juice everyday, she say's it will help to get rid of mucus in my stoma.
To be honest it hasn't worked so far.
However if you are all saying that it is bad for the IC bladder, then I wonder if I should stop drinking it?
My bladder is very over active an keep's me up all night long, I am running to the bathroom constantly.
Could this be the cranberry juice causing the problem's to worsen?
Is there another juice I can try instead? as my stoma is always full of mucus even though I drink plenty of spring water and other drinks, my mitrofanoff keeps blocking up with thick gunk.

                        (((hugs to all )))
I have had IC and PBS for 20+ years.
Tried every medication I can think off.
Had a Clam Cystoplasty with Mitrofanoff in November 2006.
Had a Total Cystectomy, with a neobladder, Urethradectomy and Mitrofanoff review, also had a peristomal hernia repaired.

Hi MUM, I don't know about the stoma problem......but you can bet all that cranberry juice is keeping you in the bathroom! There has to be some other liquid besides those that cause frequency and urgency.......I hope your dr. can help you find one......Roxie

I have just spoken to my uro surgeon and she agree's with you and told me to BIN the cranberry juice and drink just plain spring water instead.
