I like the taste of Licorice Root Tea and it is a natural sweetener. It can be mixed with other IC friendly herbs to make nice tasting herbal teas. Is it IC friendly to the bladder? I cannot quite tell.

I'm glad you found something enjoyable to drink. A word of caution, however --- licorice can cause a low potassium level, so you shouldn't drink gallons of it.

Licorice Root Benefits
I wouldn't toss the baby out with the bath water.
Licorice root is known to create a mucous that coats the bladder and intestines. I use it quite successfully to keep my flares in check and even avoid them at times.
You can balance out the low potasium by eating more foods that contains potassium and are IC safe.
High potassium content
- milk
- avocadoes
- honeydew melon
- lima beans
- potatoes
- spinach
- winter squash
- all meats, poultry, and fish
Moderate
- asparagus
- broccoli
- carrots
- corn
- green peas
- some lettuces
- pears
- summer squash and zucchini
- watermelon
Low - see link: http://www.essortment.com/all/potassiumfoodh_rkyn.htm
The key is to keep everthing in balance. I'm still learning how to do this, so I don't profess to be an expert at it. The best advice is to talk to a naturopath.Last edited by ICNDonna; 02-01-2011, 04:04 AM.Don't take my word, be your own health care advocate. I have a friend whose mother was hospitalized with stroke symptoms --- it was discovered that the cause was a potassium deficiency which her doctors feel was caused by a licorice supplement she was taking. I will repeat my advice --- be careful with this one and be sure your doctor knows you're taking it. And if you take it regularly, I suggest you ask your doctor to have potassium level checked every few months.
