  • Acceptable Condiments?

    Hi all,

    I'm just curious if anyone has any suggestions for bladder friendly condiments. I've always been a big fan of ketchup and mayonnaise, and giving them up has made my sandwiches and various other meals sort of boring.

    Any suggestions for substitutes, or just other acceptable condiments? I swear, I must be going through a pint of olive oil a day right now...

    I like fromage blanc a lot (it's a coarser cream cheese, available in gourmet cheese shops).
    Or I use Philadelphia Light Cream Cheese (I only buy the block form, not the tub which has acidic preservatives).
    You can also make hummus without the lemon juice and use that as a spread (I put Safeway Organics canned garbanzo beans, olive oil, oregano & garlic into the food processor) and puree.

    Current treatments:
    -IC diet
    -Elavil 50mg at night
    -Continuous use birth control pills (4-5 periods/year)
    -Heparin/Marcaine/Sodium Bicarb home instills at night 3-4x per week, more often if needed
    -Pyridium if needed,

    -Antibiotic when doing an instillation to prevent UTI
    -Colace & SmartFiber to treat chronic constipation from meds, Fleet enema as needed
    -Dye Free Benadryl 50 mg at bedtime
    -"Your Pace Yoga: Relieving Pelvic Pain" dvd, walking, treadmill at gym
    -Managing stress= VERY important!
    -Fur therapy: Hugging the cat!

      I like your idea for acid-free hummus Kadi. I used to eat hummus all of the time, but then phased in out when starting the IC diet . . . time to bring it back!

      My go-to ketchup substitute is roasted red pepper sauce.

      If my bladder is feeling particularly well, I will sometimes use one part honey mustard with one part (or more) honey mixed together. Makes a good spread or a dip for chicken fingers. I've also made up a quick honey-garlic dip by putting in a good dose of powdered garlic into honey (but do not use a dark honey like buckwheat -- yuck!).

      For sandwiches, sliced or mashed avocado works well. Of course, cheese is a must if you can have it (I eat goat's cheese).

      IC symptoms: Cramping, burning, frequency. Pain!

      Pain management: Ibuprofen. AZO. Marijuana. Prelief. The IC Diet.

        You can also make your own "mayo" with eggs, egg yolks, cannola or olive oil and just a touch of apple cider vinegar (if you can tolerate it). It ain't Hellman's, but it doesn't hurt either. Jill, wife of Bob

          I am ok with a little mayo or ranch dip. But I usually use (block) cream cheese (great on a turkey sandwich), or Smart Balance spread. If you are ok with butter, softened butter tastes good too.

            Apple cider vinegar is acid

              Roasted red pepper sauce sounds promising... any brands in particular that seem to be okay?
