  • Dennys

So I went to Denny's with my boyfriend and another couple and got 2 hearty wheat pancakes, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, and fries. I thought that those might be safe, but apparently not, because I woke up today with so much pain and am still in it!!

Does anyone know if there is anything safe to eat at Dennys?

Also my boss wants to take me and my coworker out to lunch to Panera today, but I'm unsure if there is anything I can eat there. I called them to ask about their ingredients but am still pretty unsure. Can anyone help?

    Thanks!
    Emily Anne

I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions for you. Sometimes restaurants use "special" seasonings on their fries and such. I don't go to Denny's so I am not sure on that one. We have a panera bread but I haven't found anything that I feel comfortable to eat there. One suggestion is to look on the internet for the menu of restaurants ahead of time and see if something looks like it would work for you.

Keep in mind that even though you may ask for something without sauce or seasonings, there will still be things in the oil or on the grill from other orders and if you are extremely sensitive you might have a problem.

Hopefully someone else will see your post and give you some input on Panera.

Some ICers have a problem with oatmeal --- I personally don't. It could easily have been something in the pancakes --- I don't do well with whole wheat, but can have pancakes made with white flour. It can sometimes be a mystery. I hope you feel better soon.

Did you use the syrup in Denny's or bring your own? The syrups in restaurants are usually just full of chemicals. I have been using pure maple syrup & have even brought my own with me hidden in my pocketbook. Maybe it was that?

Panera has all their ingredients on their website. I order roast beef on country loaf bread(its their white bread) with just lettuce. Their potato chips were fine with me too.

            Hi Emily~
Although salt is on the IC friendly diet list, my Mother Donna can't have any salt, as it sends her over the edge into a terrible flare for days on end. Like pouring salt into an open wound as they say. Everyone is different with the diet and not everything on the friendly list may work for you. My Mother always says that she won't forget what she can't have, but it seems I'm reminding her a lot of times as well. It's good to keep a log, as the list will get much larger as you narrow it down. Hope you feel better soon! Carolyn

              Carolyn,
I find that my mind "forgets" things once I am feeling better too. Kind of like child birth, if we really remembered how bad it was, we wouldn't do it again!LOL Keeping a journal is a very good idea.

yeah I've been keeping a journal for a while now, and it has proved really helpful. I'm able to look back and see when I am in the most pain and what food may have triggered it. This may sound a little weird but my pain has always been on my right side and left side of my front, not in the very middle. I know that other people have gone through that too, but when I eat something that is bad it hurts on my right side... when it's my period or just normal pain (not from diet) it seems to hurt really bad on my left side. Weird huh?

Panera has always been a favorite for me - that is in my past life.

My friends like to meet there for lunch sometimes. I am reluctant to order their salads because of the dressings they offer are acidic. I have lately just had their broccoli cheese soup and it caused no pain. They do change their menu seasonaly. Bakery foods are okay with me. Once when I was coasting along without any incidents I ordered a mango smoothie and had no problems. The next time I did. So we are always taking chances it seems.

                    Lable Ingredients

Yes, I hear you on that note. My Mother has been trying different places and has found that there are very few she can eat from. My Mom has now had IC for almost a year and she has finally gotten to the point where we are looking at the ingredients on every lable. Although the IC Friendly list gives you the tools to eat what is most friendly, it is important to look at the ingredient lables when you purchase what is supposed to be friendly from your super market. You will find that almost everything you think is friendly, is not. The only way to really be safe is to make it homemade. I do most of the research for my Mom and am shocked at how many bad things go into shelf foods just so they last a few days, its crazy. My Mom had to go through what she has to get to this point. She has had very few days where she has felt good and even then she is still in pain, and has been since she has been diagnosed, just more tollerable pain some days. Now she vows to be pain free. I hope she/we can get there for her. If anything works, I'll keep you posted. Were determined. Carolyn and Mom Donna

Carolyn- You are a sweet daughter and a blessing to your mother to search out the ingredients for her. My daughter is sympathetic to my problem too but has little time from her family to check out foods.
I hope your mom gains relief from this ailment. I find every time I entertain and cook food for others like family/friends I have a flare. Also each weekend after eating out with friends I can expect a flare. I am just learning to deal with it. I don't want to be isolated from friends so just do the best I can.
