  • Overdosing on water?

    Hi IC community,

I had the weirdest thing happen today. Well, first I was diagnosed about 9 months ago and it has been very difficult but in the last few months I have felt less pain, more frequency. I am currently taking vesicare which is usually for people with overactive bladder when I first got on it I thought it was a miracle drugs but I quickly learned that it only works when my bladder is in tip top shape if there's something that is affecting my bladder then it is worthless.

So today I tried to really drink a lot because I want to start flushing things out of my system on a more regular basis. After about 32 ounces of water at the gym I started peeing non stop like after an hour and then close to 15 min intervals, this went on for most of the afternoon. I stopped drinking the water and it still continued. Now I have a constant stinging feeling in my bladder even right after I pee like I ate/drank something that has acid or something in it. I am wracking my brain if I ate something that caused the stinging when my bladder fills up but I can't think of anything. Here's what i ate:

    cottage cheese with grape jelly
carrots/cucumbers and whole wheat flat bread with hummus
half a hoagie (sub) with turkey, lettuce, cheese for dinner..

But the stingy and full bladder constantly really started after the water. I havent felt this way in a while but I also think that I am really stressed out. I am sleep deprived because of my neighbors barking dogs, I am taking my final exams in order to complete my masters, and I am also job hunting. It's a stressful time. I just was hoping someone might be able to shed light on why I am feeling this way. I always want to find an answer for my IC and sometimes there isn't any and its so frustrating. Any thoughts would be great..sorry this is so long!

I am sorry that happened. I know the feeling of having to pee for over an hour. It can be very irritating when that happens.

What kind of cheese did you have? I know I can only tolerate mozzarella cheese. Some people can tolerate white american cheese.

I noticed you mentioned grape jelly. Grape jelly used to be one of my all time favorite sweet foods and it is not IC friendly unfortunatley. How I miss my Peanut Butter & Grape Jelly sandwich. Grape Jelly has a lot of citric acid in it.

Stress can also cause your bladder to act up badly. I was under horrible stress from December 2010 until March 24th of this year worrying about if I was going to be able to have surgery. March 24th is when I had my surgery. All of the stress from worrying about insurance coverage resulted in a lot of restless nights with little to hardly any sleep.

If I eat something that I know that is not IC safe without taking at least 2 Prelief and drinking water mixed with baking soda I have horrible flares. Once I had a to get up and down out of bed for five hours just to go pee. Only because I did not take Prelief or drink water with baking soda in it.

I don't think water caused you to pee like you did. I personally think that it was the Grape Jelly and all of your stress.

But all I can suggest is buy some Prelief if you don't have any, try mixing baking soda with water (it tastes horrible but it can help with the burning) and look over the IC food list). I love Prelief since it takes some of the acid out of the food that irritates our bladder.

One thing I would like to mention if you try drinking water with baking soda in it I suggest only doing that if you have normal blood pressure. I think it was my urologist who said too much baking soda can cause your blood pressure to go up. My urologist also said to only use 1 teaspoon of baking soda.

I hope that you get to feeling better soon.
