    Hi,

I am wondering if eating something that causes pain only causes the pain/frequency/urgency for days-weeks or if it also causes lasting damage like celiac disease does? I think that if someone has celiac disease, if they eat something with gluten in it it does serious damage to the villi in their intestines. I know that if we eat something like chocolate, it causes inflammation and cuts in the bladder. Does that cause lasting damage that won't heal or does it eventually heal?

I am wondering because I am contemplating having a day a year where I choose some small things that I normally can't have (chocolate) and eat some of it. If it's gonna cause permanent damage then I will definitely rethink it.

    Thanks,
    Emily Anne

Had abdominal pain since I was 12 that started getting much more severe when I entered college. I just got diagnosed in February 2011.

    Medications:
    Elmiron (100mg) 3x/day
    Prelief

    Diagnosis:
Severe IC, Bladder which holds 300 mg rather than the normal 600 mg, Pelvic Floor Myalgia, Imperforate Hymen (surgery in 2008), Ovarian Cysts

    Treatments:
Heating pad/rice sock, laying down when in pain, rescue IC diet

There was recently another thread started on just this subject. Someone's uro had told them that offending foods may cause irritation to the bladder but wouldn't harm the bladder lining. I forgot the name of the thread though but it was fairly recent. There were quite a few replys.

If I accidentally ingest a trigger, it does cause discomfort, but only for a few days at most. If you put an irritant on a sore, it causes pain, but once the irritant is removed, it doesn't worsen the sore. The biggest reason to avoid triggers it that it avoids pain --- which to me is extremely important.

Along with that thought. I can tolerate chocolate in moderation.

Thanks everyone! I really hope I can tolerate chocolate in moderation, though even before I knew I had IC I thought I could be allergic to chocolate because my pain always got worse when I had it...

Oh well. I guess I'll just live with having chocolate once a year, if the pain isn't too bad and doesn't last a really long time.

I can also eat chocolate in moderation. Just be choosy and save it for something really great. Usually, I have no reaction at all or just some extra peeing until it's gone.
