  • Diet Questions- Blueberries

So my wife got the book Solving IC and started a diet with probiotic supplements. The past week was pretty good however yesterday- she just had blueberries, pumpkins seeds and salad but got a big flare-up.

    Can blueberries cause flare-ups?

    Thanks.

What did she have in the salad? blueberrys are IC friendly.
Also, watermelon and pears, she needs to stick with the IC diet for now.

Most ICers tolerate blueberries well. What was in the salad --- did she put any dressing on it?

No dressing. She did drink Bom Dia Acai +10 superfruit drink....Perhaps to much fruit. Its still the first week on the IC Diet so perhaps we get days like this? Two steps forward and one step back?

Just want her to do better because the doc wants the interstim device for her and I dont think we are even close to fighting this.

I suspect it was the juice that brought on the flare --- there are some fruits in that combination that are questionable at best.

fruity drinks are the worst for us! most of them contain fruits we can't tolerate but to make it worse, they add "flavorings" to get more taste, things like citric acid... so i just avoid all those "vitamin" or "fruit flavored" drinks. and those little packets you add to water are horrible for most of us.
i stick to a few "safe" herbal teas. most of them are fine hot or cold. i can ice peppermint tea and it is wonderful with a squeeze of honey on a hot day.

it takes a while to "perfect" the diet. its a lot of learning lessons the hard way. what helped me most was to start a very detailed food/pain journal.

              Hi mugabi,
Fruits are hardest part of the IC diet because most of the fruits are very acidic.
Try few slices of mild sweet apple to see how you feel.
Water melons do provoke symptoms for quite a few patients, you can also have mango or papaya.

I am one that blueberries don't sit well with. I have tried and tried but just can't tolerate them.

I agree with Donna...probably the fruit drink. I can only tolerate Blueberries. As a matter of fact, that was the ONLY fruit I could drink/eat besides water when first dx'd.

                      Simple

Yes, since you are new to the IC diet don't get discouraged. It takes time. The diet is a bit hard to figure out at first. Mostly you have to read all labels--on absolutely everything you eat. I try to stay away from all additives and preservatives.

I would say it's just a very simple way of eating. It's amazing at first to think of all the extra stuff added to foods. It took me forever at first reading so many labels. If you have a health food store or Trader Joe's or Clarks--they usually have more "natural" foods without the preservatives etc.

Fruits I can have dates (yum), blueberries, pears, and coconut. It's so nice of you to help your wife out. It just takes some patience in the beginning.
